R. Baine Harris

Robert Paul "Tad" Williams, born March 14, 1957, is an American author recognized for his extensive contributions to the fantasy and science fiction genres. His notable works include the multivolume series Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, Otherland, Shadowmarch, and The Bobby Dollar series, alongside standalone novels like Tailchaser's Song. His most recent work, The Last King of Osten Ard series, concluded in 2024. With over 17 million copies sold worldwide, Williams has also engaged in comic book writing for DC Comics and collaborated with his wife, Deborah Beale, on young-adult fiction.

Before dedicating himself to full-time fiction writing, Williams held a variety of professions, including roles in food service, radio, sales, and even technical writing for Apple Computer. His early career also saw him involved in interactive multimedia development, leading to the creation of a company called Telemorphix and a television broadcast. His writing journey began in his mid-twenties, leading to the publication of his first novel, Tailchaser's Song, with DAW Books, initiating a long-standing relationship with the publisher.

Williams's inclination towards lengthy narratives was evident from a young age, with early creative writing assignments significantly exceeding the expected length. His literary influences are broad, ranging from classic children's literature like E. Prior to establishing himself as a full-time author, Tad Williams engaged in a wide spectrum of occupations. These included newspaper delivery, food service, and a role as a DJ and music director for college radio. He also worked in shoe sales and managed a financial institution. A significant period involved working for Apple Computer, where he developed an interest in interactive multimedia. This led him to co-found a company named Telemorphix with Andrew Harris, aiming to produce such content. Their efforts resulted in "M. Jack Steckel's 21st Century Vaudeville," a program aired on local television in the San Francisco Bay Area during 1992 and 1993. Williams also conceptualized a TV series called "Valley Vision," focusing on a local television station, for which a pilot episode was filmed.
