John Michell was an English author and esotericist, a significant figure in the Earth Mysteries movement. Born into wealth, he pursued diverse interests, including Ufology and property development, before dedicating himself to exploring ancient traditions and earth energies. Michell authored over forty books, many focusing on his theories about ley lines, which he posited as prehistoric markers for extraterrestrial spacecraft, and the concept of a lost ancient spiritual tradition.

His most impactful works, such as 'The Flying Saucer Vision' and 'The View Over Atlantis', proposed that ancient civilizations were guided by extraterrestrial beings and that sacred sites were designed to channel earth energies. Michell believed this lost knowledge would be revived, ushering in a Golden Age with Britain at its center. His ideas, while controversial among academics, profoundly influenced the Earth Mysteries and Pagan movements, and later touched upon far-right esoteric thought. Michell also co-founded a crop circle magazine and wrote columns on anti-modernist and esoteric topics.

Born in London in 1933 to a prosperous family, John Michell received his education at Cheam School and Eton College. After serving as a Russian translator in the Royal Navy and briefly studying languages at Cambridge, he qualified as a chartered surveyor. He then joined his father's property business in London, an environment where his interest in Ufology began to develop. Michell's early life also included a connection to counter-culture activities through the London Free School. He fathered a son, Jason Goodwin, with Jocasta Innes, with whom he later developed a close relationship.

Michell became deeply involved in the Earth Mysteries movement in the 1960s. His book 'The Flying Saucer Vision' expanded on the concept of ley lines, suggesting they were ancient pathways created to guide alien spacecraft. He further developed these ideas in 'The View Over Atlantis', proposing that ancient societies were connected to a lost spiritual tradition and that megalithic structures were built to harness earth energies. Michell believed this ancient knowledge would eventually be rediscovered, leading to a new Golden Age centered in Britain. His work was highly influential, often in opposition to academic views, and is considered a foundational text for the modern Earth Mysteries movement.

Beyond his core theories, Michell's extensive writings covered a wide range of subjects, including the Shakespeare authorship question and the phenomenon of crop circles. He co-founded 'The Cereologist' magazine dedicated to crop circles and wrote opinion columns for 'The Oldie' and the 'Daily Mirror', often expressing anti-modernist sentiments. Michell's impact extended to the British Pagan movement and, in later years, influenced segments of the far-right's 'Radical Traditionalist' sector. He passed away in 2009, leaving a significant legacy within esoteric and alternative history circles.
