Madhava

Madhava of Sangamagrama, active around the late 14th and early 15th centuries, is recognized as the progenitor of the Kerala school of mathematics and astronomy. While details of his life are scarce, historical analysis of various manuscripts suggests his possible community and place of residence. His work marked a significant transition from ancient finite mathematical methods to the nascent field of infinite series, particularly in trigonometry, geometry, and algebra. He was the first to develop approximations using infinite series for trigonometric functions, a foundational step towards calculus. His contributions laid the groundwork for subsequent generations of mathematicians in Kerala, though precise attribution of specific discoveries remains a subject of scholarly discussion due to lost original works.

Information regarding Madhava of Sangamagrama's life is limited, pieced together from scattered references in ancient manuscripts. He is sometimes referred to as Madhavan, and evidence suggests he may have belonged to the Emprāntiri community, a group associated with the title 'Emprān'. His residence might have been in a place called Ilaññippaḷḷi, which he himself mentions in his work Veṇvāroha as bakuḷādhiṣṭhita...vihāra in Sanskrit. This name translates to a place associated with the 'bakuḷa' tree, corresponding to the Malayalam 'Ilaññi' tree. While some historians have attempted to link his name to specific locations like Irinjalakuda based on phonetic or semantic similarities, these connections are considered tenuous. The appellation 'Sangamagrama' likely refers to his village, with Kūḍallūr, a town situated at the confluence of the Nila and Kunti rivers, being a strong candidate due to its literal translation as 'Samgamagrama' (confluence village).

Madhava's most significant legacy lies in his pioneering work on infinite series, which represented a crucial advancement from traditional finite mathematical approaches. He is credited with being the first to utilize infinite series to approximate trigonometric functions such as sine, cosine, and arctangent.
