Hilary Lofting was an Australian novelist and travel writer, brother of Doctor Dolittle author Hugh Lofting.

Hilary Joseph Francis Lofting, born in London in 1881, was an Australian novelist, travel writer, journalist, and editor. He was the older brother of Hugh Lofting, the creator of Doctor Dolittle. Lofting studied Architectural Engineering at St Edmund's College, Cambridge, and after graduating, worked as a civil engineer on railway projects in Ireland, Europe, and Argentina.

He married May Wheatcroft in 1915 and moved to Australia in 1917. Encouraged by friends, he began writing under the pseudonym "Francis Brien," detailing his experiences in Buenos Aires. His travel writing gained recognition, leading him to pursue writing full-time, a decision his first wife opposed. He later married Margaret Fane, the ex-wife of his editor David McKee Wright. Together, Lofting and Fane collaborated on short stories for various publications. Lofting was also acquainted with poet Christopher Brennan. Hilary Lofting passed away in Sydney in 1939, recognized as a notable Australian short story writer.

Early Life and Engineering Career

Born Hilary Joseph Francis Lofting in London on May 23, 1881, he was the eldest of six children to John Brien Lofting and Elizabeth Agnes Gannon, of English and Irish heritage. He pursued studies in Architectural Engineering at St Edmund's College, Cambridge. Following his education, Lofting engaged in civil engineering, contributing to railway construction across Ireland, continental Europe, and Argentina. Upon completing these projects, he returned to England and attempted to enlist for military service, but was twice unsuccessful in his attempts.

Literary Pursuits and Collaborations

In 1915, Lofting married May Wheatcroft in London. The couple relocated to Australia in 1917. Friends encouraged him to document his experiences in Buenos Aires, leading him to adopt the pen name "Francis Brien." His travel narratives were well-received and brought to the attention of David McKee Wright, editor of The Bulletin, who published his work. Lofting then decided to transition to writing as a full-time profession, leaving his civil engineering career behind, though his wife May was not in favor of this change. The following year, Lofting remarried Margaret Fane, who was previously married to Wright. Lofting and Fane frequently collaborated on short stories that appeared in publications such as The Sydney Mail and The Sydney Morning Herald. During this period, Lofting also maintained a friendship with the poet Christopher Brennan.

Recognition and Death

Hilary Lofting died in Manly, a suburb of Sydney, in 1939. His contributions to Australian literature were acknowledged during his lifetime and posthumously. He was listed among distinguished Australian short story writers, alongside notable figures such as Edward J. O'Brien, Henry Handel Richardson, and Alan Marshall, indicating his recognized standing within the literary community of the time.
