Tetraktys

Concept

The Tetraktys is a sacred triangular figure composed of ten points arranged in four rows (1, 2, 3, 4). It represents fundamental cosmic principles and the perfection of the number ten, a key symbol in Pythagorean philosophy and mysticism.

Where the word comes from

The term "Tetraktys" derives from the Greek word "tetraktys," meaning "fourfold" or "four." It refers to the four rows of points forming the triangular shape, which sum to ten (1+2+3+4=10). This concept was central to Pythagorean cosmology and mathematics.

In depth

or the Tdrad. The sacred "Four" by which the Pythagoreans swore, this beingtheir most binding oath. It has a very mystic and varied signitication, being the same as the Tetragrammaton. First of all it is I'^nity. or the "One" under four different aspects; then it is the fundamental number Four, the Tetrad containing the Decad, or Ten, the number of perfection ; finally it signifies the primeval Triad (or Triangle) merged in the divine Monad. Kircher, the learned Kabbalist-Jesuit, in his (Edipns yEgypticus (II., p. 267), gives the Ineffable Name IHVII — one of the Kabbalistic formulae of the 72 names — arranged in the shape of the Pythagorean Tetrad. Mr. I. Myer gives it in this wise : 1 1 = 10 2 The Ineffable H^ = 15 ... 3 Name thus IH^ = 21 .... 4 mn^ = 26 10 72 He also show^s that "the sacred Tetrad of the Pythagoreans appears to have been known to the ancient Chinese". As explained in Isis Unveiled (I, xvi.) : The mystic Decad, the resultant of the Tetraktys, or the 1+2+3-f 4^10, is a way of expressing this idea. The One is the impersonal principle 'God'; the Two, matter; the Three, combining JNIonad and Duad and partaking of the nature of both, is the phenomenal world ; the Tetrad, or form of perfection, expresses the emptiness of all ; and the Decad, or sum of all, involves the entire Kosmos.

How different paths see it

Hermetic
The Tetraktys's emphasis on numerical harmony and divine proportion resonates with Hermetic principles, particularly the idea that "as above, so below," where geometric forms reflect cosmic order and the divine intellect.
Hindu
In Hindu traditions, the concept of underlying unity expressed through diverse forms finds parallels. The emergent properties of the Tetraktys from simple numbers echo the manifestation of the cosmos from Brahman.
Kabbalah
The Tetraktys shares conceptual space with the Kabbalistic Sephirot, particularly the ten emanations of God. Both systems use a structured arrangement of divine principles to map the universe and the path of creation.
Taoist
The Taoist emphasis on the interplay of fundamental forces and the generation of multiplicity from unity (e.g., the Tao begets One, One begets Two, etc.) aligns with the Tetraktys as a model of cosmic generation and order.
Modern Non-dual
The Tetraktys offers a visual and numerical representation of how a unified source (the One) can manifest into a complex, ordered reality (the Ten), reflecting non-dual philosophies that see all phenomena arising from a single, undifferentiated consciousness.

What it means today

The Tetraktys, a geometric and numerical symbol of Pythagorean thought, offers a compelling model for understanding the emergence of complexity from simplicity. It is not merely a mathematical curiosity but a sacred diagram, an invocation of cosmic order. As Mircea Eliade noted in The Myth of the Eternal Return, such symbolic structures serve as conduits to the sacred, providing a blueprint for both the cosmos and the human soul. For the Pythagoreans, swearing by the Tetraktys was the most solemn oath, signifying a commitment to the fundamental truths of existence.

This triangular arrangement, summing to ten, a number of perfection, illustrates a hierarchical unfolding of reality. The single point represents the Monad, the ultimate unity. The subsequent rows—two points, three points, four points—suggest the generation of duality, trinity, and finally, the quaternary, which, when summed, yield the Decad. This mirrors concepts found across traditions, such as the Kabbalistic Sephirot or the Taoist generation of the ten thousand things from the Tao. It speaks to a universe where order is inherent, where the divine mind manifests through discernible, harmonious patterns.

In The Psychology of the Unconscious, Carl Jung explored the archetypal significance of geometric forms and numbers, suggesting they tap into a collective unconscious, a universal language of the psyche. The Tetraktys, with its inherent balance and progression, can be seen as an embodiment of such an archetype, a visual metaphor for spiritual ascent or the unfolding of consciousness. It invites contemplation on how seemingly disparate elements can coalesce into a meaningful, unified whole, a principle that resonates deeply with modern seekers grappling with fragmentation and seeking integration.

The practice associated with the Tetraktys, though not as codified as prayer or meditation, involved deep contemplation of its numerical and geometric properties, seeing in it a reflection of the divine architecture. It was a way to attune oneself to the underlying harmony of the universe, to perceive the sacred geometry that governs existence. The Tetraktys reminds us that even in the most intricate manifestations, there is a foundational unity, a simple, elegant truth waiting to be perceived. It is a reminder that the universe speaks in numbers and shapes, a language accessible to those who listen with the inner ear.
