Tetraktys

The term "Tetraktys" derives from the Greek word "tetraktys," meaning "fourfold" or "four." It refers to the four rows of points forming the triangular shape, which sum to ten (1+2+3+4=10). This concept was central to Pythagorean cosmology and mathematics.

Kircher, the learned Kabbalist-Jesuit, in his (Edipns yEgypticus (II., p. 267), gives the Ineffable Name IHVII — one of the Kabbalistic formulae of the 72 names — arranged in the shape of the Pythagorean Tetrad. Mr. I. Myer gives it in this wise : 1 1 = 10 2 The Ineffable H^ = 15 ... 3 Name thus IH^ = 21 .... 4 mn^ = 26 10 72 He also show^s that "the sacred Tetrad of the Pythagoreans appears to have been known to the ancient Chinese". As explained in Isis Unveiled (I, xvi.) : The mystic Decad, the resultant of the Tetraktys, or the 1+2+3-f 4^10, is a way of expressing this idea. The One is the impersonal principle 'God'; the Two, matter; the Three, combining JNIonad and Duad and partaking of the nature of both, is the phenomenal world ; the Tetrad, or form of perfection, expresses the emptiness of all ; and the Decad, or sum of all, involves the entire Kosmos.

The Tetraktys, a geometric and numerical symbol of Pythagorean thought, offers a compelling model for understanding the emergence of complexity from simplicity. It was a way to attune oneself to the underlying harmony of the universe, to perceive the sacred geometry that governs existence. The Tetraktys reminds us that even in the most intricate manifestations, there is a foundational unity, a simple, elegant truth waiting to be perceived. It is a reminder that the universe speaks in numbers and shapes, a language accessible to those who listen with the inner ear.
