Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins, born August 10, 1962, is an American author and television writer. She gained widespread recognition for her young adult dystopian fiction series, The Hunger Games, and also authored the children's fantasy series, The Underland Chronicles. Collins began her career in children's television, writing for numerous Nickelodeon and PBS shows before transitioning to literature.

Her inspiration for The Underland Chronicles stemmed from a thought about falling down a manhole, leading to the first book, Gregor the Overlander. The Hunger Games series was partly influenced by Greek mythology and her father's military career, exploring themes of poverty, starvation, and the consequences of war. The success of The Hunger Games led to film adaptations and significant commercial achievement, including being named one of Time magazine's most influential people.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, on August 10, 1962, Suzanne Collins is the youngest of four children. Her father, a U.S. Air Force officer, served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, leading the family to move frequently, including periods in Brussels, Belgium, and various locations in the eastern United States. As a child, Collins enjoyed reading, gymnastics, and exploring the outdoors. She pursued higher education in the arts, graduating from the Alabama School of Fine Arts with a major in Theater Arts in 1980. She continued her studies at Indiana University Bloomington, earning a Bachelor of Arts in theater and telecommunications in 1985, and later obtained a Master of Fine Arts in dramatic writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1989.

Collins launched her writing career in 1991, contributing to children's television shows like "Clarissa Explains It All" and "The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo" for Nickelodeon, and serving as head writer for PBS's "Clifford's Puppy Days." A pivotal moment occurred when she met children's author James Proimos, inspiring her to write her own books. Her children's fantasy series, The Underland Chronicles, began with "Gregor the Overlander." The concept for this series was sparked by the idea of falling down a manhole, reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland" but with a more grounded entry. This series, published between 2003 and 2007, comprises five books.

Collins's most famous work, The Hunger Games, debuted in 2008. The inspiration for this dystopian young adult series draws from the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, as well as her father's military background, which provided insight into the impacts of war, poverty, and starvation. The trilogy, consisting of "The Hunger Games," "Catching Fire," and "Mockingjay," achieved immense popularity, leading to major film adaptations and significant commercial success. She later expanded the universe with a prequel, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," published in 2020, and "Sunrise on the Reaping" in 2025.
