While her work was influential, some of her methods and ingredients were considered controversial. Nevertheless, she remains a significant reference for those interested in European medicinal herbs.

Life and Displacement

Born Maria Günzel in 1907 in Žatec, Bohemia (then part of Austria-Hungary), Maria Treben was the middle of three daughters. Her father, a printing shop owner, passed away when she was ten. Following World War I, her homeland became part of Czechoslovakia. A significant upheaval occurred at the end of World War II in 1945 when Maria and her husband, Ernst Gottfried Treben, were among those expelled from Czechoslovakia. They spent several years in refugee camps before finding a permanent home in Austria, settling in Grieskirchen in 1951.
