Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish writer, best known for 'The Wind in the Willows', who had a successful banking career before focusing on literature.

Born in Edinburgh in 1859, Kenneth Grahame's early life was marked by the deaths of his mother and a brother, leading him to be raised by his grandmother in England. Despite a desire for university, his uncle's opposition led him to a long and successful career at the Bank of England, rising to the position of Secretary. Throughout his time at the bank, Grahame pursued literary endeavors, publishing collections of essays and stories. His early works, such as 'Pagan Papers', 'The Golden Age', and 'Dream Days', explored themes of childhood and were met with critical acclaim. These publications established his reputation as a writer before the immense success of his children's classic, 'The Wind in the Willows', published in 1908. Grahame retired from the bank the same year, ostensibly due to ill-health, and dedicated himself to his writing. His later life was spent in various locations, and he passed away in 1932.

Early Life and Education

Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh in 1859. Following his mother's death and his father's subsequent decline, Grahame and his siblings were sent to live with their maternal grandmother in Berkshire, England. Although he excelled academically and in sports at St Edward's School in Oxford, Grahame's aspiration to attend university was not realized. Instead, he entered the employ of his uncle's firm and subsequently began a nearly thirty-year career at the Bank of England, where he achieved the significant position of Secretary.

Literary Career and Notable Works

While employed at the Bank of England, Grahame cultivated his writing talents. He began publishing essays and stories in periodicals, leading to the release of 'Pagan Papers' in 1893, followed by 'The Golden Age' in 1895 and 'Dream Days' in 1898. These works, often reflecting on childhood experiences and perceptions, garnered critical attention and established his literary reputation. The pinnacle of his writing career came with the publication of 'The Wind in the Willows' in 1908, a work that has since become a beloved classic of children's literature.

Later Life and Retirement

Grahame retired from the Bank of England in 1908, citing ill-health, though other accounts suggest workplace conflict may have played a role. He received a pension upon his departure. He moved to Cookham Dean and shortly thereafter published 'The Wind in the Willows'. Despite mixed initial reviews, the book achieved enduring popularity. Grahame later relocated to Blewbury, near Oxford. His son, Alastair, faced academic challenges before preparing for university. Grahame continued to write and passed away in 1932.
