Elisabetta Dami, born in 1958, is an Italian writer primarily known for her immensely successful Geronimo Stilton book series for children. Her journey into publishing began at a young age within her family's publishing house, starting as a proofreader at thirteen and writing her first stories at nineteen. Dami's life has been marked by a passion for adventure, evidenced by her obtaining pilot and parachutist licenses, extensive global travel, and participation in challenging expeditions like desert rallies, cross-continental drives, and ultramarathons. She has also completed multiple marathons.

Dami's inspiration for the Geronimo Stilton character emerged from her volunteer work at a children's hospital, following her inability to have children. She began crafting engaging adventure stories featuring a mouse protagonist, aiming to bring laughter and comfort to sick children, a concept aligned with the therapeutic value of humor in healing. These stories quickly gained widespread popularity, translating into 49 languages and selling over 180 million copies worldwide, establishing Geronimo Stilton as a global phenomenon.

Elisabetta Dami entered the publishing world at the tender age of thirteen, working as a proofreader for her father's company, Dami Editore, which he founded in 1972. By nineteen, she had already begun crafting her own short stories. Her early career was shaped by a deep love for adventure and exploration. At twenty, she earned her pilot and parachutist licenses, showcasing a daring spirit. Her adventurous pursuits extended to a solo circumnavigation of the globe at twenty-three and completing a rigorous survival course at the renowned Outward Bound school in Maine. These formative experiences fueled her imagination and likely contributed to the adventurous narratives she would later create.

Dami's life is characterized by a remarkable series of adventurous feats and a commitment to humanitarian and environmental causes. She has participated in challenging events such as a rally in the Sahara Desert, a north-to-south crossing of Africa in an off-road vehicle, the 100-km Sahara ultramarathon, and has completed three New York marathons. Beyond personal challenges, Dami actively promotes culture and values through numerous conferences and debates both in Italy and internationally, often supporting Italian cultural initiatives under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Her dedication to environmental conservation is evident through her two terms as a National WWF councillor and her active involvement in various conservation projects.

The creation of the globally celebrated Geronimo Stilton series stemmed from a deeply personal experience. In 1990, after discovering she could not have children, Dami began volunteering at a children's hospital. Witnessing the needs of the sick children, and inspired by the idea that laughter aids healing, she conceived of Geronimo Stilton, a clumsy mouse protagonist. Dami crafted entertaining adventure stories filled with humor and unexpected plot twists, designed to captivate young readers. This initiative, born from empathy and a desire to bring joy, resulted in a publishing sensation that has since been translated into 49 languages and sold over 180 million copies worldwide.

“For a while I worked as a volunteer in a hospital, and it was there, almost by chance, that I invented Geronimo Stilton … It was at the time when Patch Adams taught the world that children need to laugh to get better. So I started to make up funny stories in which the protagonist was a clumsy mouse called Geronimo Stilton. He would get involved in all sorts of entertaining adventures, full of funny events and twists in the plot, that children found really compelling.”
