Eberhard Zangger is a geoarchaeologist known for controversial theories linking Troy and Atlantis, and his work on Luwian culture.

Eberhard Zangger, born in 1958, is a German geoarchaeologist and publicist recognized for his theories concerning Bronze Age history in the eastern Mediterranean. His work, particularly his hypotheses about Troy and Atlantis, has generated significant debate and skepticism within the academic community, with some critics likening his approach to parascience.

Zangger's academic journey began with apprenticeships in natural history and geology, followed by university studies in geology and paleontology. He earned his doctorate from Stanford University in 1988 with research on landscape evolution in Greece. His subsequent work as a research assistant at Cambridge University focused on geoarchaeological issues, leading him to found his own geoarchaeological consulting firm. He later transitioned to strategic corporate communications before re-engaging with research and establishing the Luwian Studies Foundation in 2014 to investigate Bronze Age cultures of Western Anatolia.

The Atlantis-Troy Hypothesis and Academic Controversy

Zangger gained prominence with his 1992 book, 'The Flood from Heaven – Deciphering the Atlantis Legend,' where he proposed that Plato's account of Atlantis was based on the history of Troy. He suggested Plato adapted an ancient Egyptian version of the Trojan story, drawing parallels between Mycenaean culture and descriptions of Atlantis, and the Trojan War with the conflict between Greece and Atlantis. While initially met with some interest, this thesis faced sharp criticism from archaeologists who deemed it methodologically flawed, with some labeling it as pseudoscience. This academic friction extended to his work on the Luwians and his interpretations of the 13th-century BC eastern Mediterranean, which diverged from mainstream scholarly views and led to a public conflict with archaeologist Manfred Korfmann.

Luwian Studies and Re-engagement with Research

Following a period working in the private sector as a communications consultant, Zangger founded the Luwian Studies Foundation in 2014, serving as its president. This organization is dedicated to researching Luwian culture and its role in the Bronze Age Aegean. Zangger's research interests also encompass geoarchaeology, focusing on prehistoric coastlines and ancient hydraulic engineering, as well as the impact of the Sea Peoples on Bronze Age cultures and archaeoastronomy, particularly the calendrical functions of Hittite rock sanctuaries. He has also explored the estate of archaeologist James Mellaart, examining purported inscriptions that he believes support his theories about powerful Luwian kingdoms.

Key Ideas

  • Plato's Atlantis narrative is based on the history of Troy.
  • Luwian kingdoms played a significant role in the collapse of eastern Mediterranean states around 1200 BC.
  • Reconstruction of prehistoric coastlines and historical hydraulic engineering projects.
  • Archaeoastronomical analysis of Hittite rock sanctuaries.
  • Investigation of the authenticity and significance of the 'Beyköy 2' inscription.
