Celia Elizabeth Green

Celia Elizabeth Green, born in 1935, is a British writer and researcher in the field of parapsychology. Her parents were educators who authored educational textbooks. Green pursued higher education at Oxford University, earning multiple degrees, and later studied psychical research at Cambridge. She held a significant role as Research Secretary at the Society for Psychical Research in London for several years.

In 1961, Green established the Institute of Psychophysical Research, which she directed. Initially, the institute's focus encompassed philosophy, psychology, theoretical physics, and extrasensory perception (ESP). During the 1960s and 1970s, its primary investigations centered on hallucinations and related perceptual anomalies. In the 1980s, the institute also explored psychokinetic phenomena under her direction.

Green is the author of several books exploring unusual states of consciousness. Her work often draws on firsthand accounts and her own research. She has also contributed to collections of aphorisms and has had her writings featured on audio releases.

Celia Elizabeth Green's academic background includes degrees from Oxford University, followed by studies in psychical research at Trinity College, Cambridge. She served as the Research Secretary for the Society for Psychical Research in London from 1957 to 1962. In 1961, Green founded the Institute of Psychophysical Research, which she led as director. The institute's early interests spanned philosophy, psychology, theoretical physics, and ESP. However, its main work in the 1960s and 1970s focused on the study of hallucinations and other experiences that resemble perception. By 1982, the Institute also undertook investigations into psychokinetic phenomena, with Green still at the helm.

Green's published works delve into phenomena related to consciousness and perception. Her 1968 book, "Lucid Dreams," explored the concept of consciously altering dream content, a topic met with skepticism by some academics. In this work, she compiled existing accounts and her own longitudinal studies, proposing a link between lucid dreaming and the REM stage of sleep. Also in 1968, she released a collection of 400 firsthand accounts of out-of-body experiences to aid scientific study. Co-authored with Charles McCreery, "Apparitions" (1975) categorized hallucinations where the subject's viewpoint wasn't displaced, based on 1500 collected accounts. A review noted a lack of verification and minimal objective classification in the book.

Beyond her research-focused books, Celia Elizabeth Green's writings include aphorisms that have appeared in published collections. Her aphorisms are featured in "The Decline and Fall of Science" and "Advice to Clever Children." Notably, ten of her aphorisms are included in The Penguin Dictionary of Epigrams, and three in The Penguin Dictionary of Modern Quotations, highlighting their recognition in broader literary contexts. Green has also been involved in audio releases; a 1995 CD titled "Lucid Dreams 0096" featured parts of her book "Lucid Dreams" narrated by her. Earlier, she contributed a nine-minute track, "In the Extreme," to a compilation CD, consisting of readings from "The Human Evasion" and "Advice to Clever Children."
