Bruce Frantzis is a Taoist educator who studied extensively in Asia and now teaches Taoist practices in the West.
Bruce Frantzis, born in April 1949, is an educator in Taoist traditions with a lifelong dedication to Eastern energetic practices. His journey began with martial arts, leading him to Japan at eighteen to study at Sophia University and train with Aikido's founder, Morihei Ueshiba. He expanded his studies to Taiwan and China, delving into internal martial arts.
In 1973, Frantzis traveled to India to explore meditation's origins, undertaking intensive training in various yogic disciplines and experiencing Kundalini Shakti. Returning to China in the mid-1970s, he gained rare access to the Taoist Fire tradition, completing seven years of training and becoming a priest. He was subsequently accepted as a direct disciple of Taoist Immortal Liu Hung-Chieh, inheriting the Water tradition lineages. Through his teacher, he also trained as a Medical Qigong doctor.
Since inheriting the Water tradition lineages in 1986, Frantzis has dedicated himself to transmitting Taoist healing, meditative, and martial arts to the West. He primarily teaches the Energy Arts qigong System, Wu-style tai chi, bagua, Taoist yoga, and Taoist meditation, having authored numerous books and instructed thousands of students.
Taoist Lineages and Training
Bruce Frantzis's extensive study of Taoism includes unique access to closely guarded traditions. He became a priest in the Taoist Fire tradition after seven years of training, an accomplishment noted as being the first Westerner to receive such insider access. Following this, he became the direct disciple of Liu Hung-Chieh, a steward of the Taoist Water tradition. Frantzis inherited the Water tradition lineages from his teacher. His training also extended to Medical Qigong, where he completed his studies by working in Chinese cancer clinics.
Transmission of Taoist Arts
Following the passing of his teacher Liu Hung-Chieh in 1986, Bruce Frantzis has focused on imparting the teachings of Taoism to Western students. His efforts encompass the healing, meditative, and martial aspects of these traditions. He is known for teaching the Energy Arts qigong System, Wu-style tai chi, bagua, Taoist yoga, and Taoist meditation. Frantzis has authored several books on these subjects and has taught a significant number of students, many of whom have become certified instructors themselves.
Broader Spiritual Engagement
Beyond his primary focus on Taoism, Bruce Frantzis has engaged with other spiritual paths. He has been a regular participant in the Tibetan Buddhist community since training under Dudjom Rinpoche in 1976. Frantzis is an active student of Dzogchen, an advanced Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which he views as sharing a common origin with the Taoist Water tradition. His current teaching emphasis aligns with his late teacher's wishes, centering on healing and meditation practices.
