Mary Austin
Mary Austin Holley, a cousin of Stephen F. Austin, authored the first English history of Texas.
Mary Austin Holley (1784–1846) was an American writer recognized for her significant contributions to the historical documentation of Texas. Born Mary Phelps Austin in New Haven, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Elijah Austin, a merchant and American Revolution veteran, and Esther Phelps Austin. After her father's death and the insolvency of his estate, she was adopted by her maternal uncle, Timothy Phelps, a successful businessman, and his wife Jennett. Holley grew up with a strong inclination towards literature, writing, and music. She married Horace Holley, a seminary student, in 1805. The couple moved to Kentucky, where Horace served as president of Transylvania University. Dissatisfied with the intellectual atmosphere, Holley began her literary pursuits, eventually writing the first English-language book about Texas. Despite visiting the region five times between 1831 and 1843, she was never able to establish residency due to financial constraints. She was a cousin of Stephen F. Austin, who facilitated a land grant for her in Texas.
Early Life and Education
Born Mary Phelps Austin in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1784, she was the daughter of Elijah Austin, a merchant and veteran of the American Revolution, and Esther Phelps Austin. Her father's business ventures, including shipping, faced financial ruin, and he died of yellow fever before her tenth birthday. Following her father's death, Mary was adopted by her maternal uncle, Timothy Phelps, a prosperous businessman, and his wife Jennett. She remained with them even after her mother remarried. Holley received her education in local schools, developing a particular passion for literature, writing, and music. In 1804, her cousin Stephen F. Austin, who would later become a pivotal figure in Texas history, came to live with the Phelps family for his education. The following year, Mary married Horace Holley, then a seminary student.
Literary Career and Texas History
Mary Austin Holley's most significant literary achievement was the authorship of the first known English-language history of Texas. Her initial work, titled Texas, was published in 1833 and later expanded into the History of Texas in 1836. This work provided an early and comprehensive account of the region. Holley was deeply interested in Texas, a sentiment possibly influenced by her cousin Stephen F. Austin, who arranged for her to receive a land grant on Galveston Bay. She visited Texas on five separate occasions: in 1831, 1835, 1838, 1840, and 1843. Despite these visits and her desire to relocate, she was unable to afford to move permanently to Texas. Her writing also extended to promoting the annexation of Texas, fostering Mexican-American relations, and supporting the arts.
