Tanuja Desai Hidier

Tanuja Desai Hidier is an Indian-American author and singer-songwriter, recognized for her young adult novels, particularly "Born Confused" (2002) and its sequel "Bombay Blues" (2014). Born in Massachusetts to parents who met in medical school in Mumbai, Hidier's family background, including an intercaste marriage that was initially controversial, influenced her writing, notably serving as a basis for the parental relationship in "Born Confused." She is an alumna of Brown University and currently resides in London.

Hidier's literary debut, "Born Confused," is a coming-of-age story centered on an Indian-American teenager named Dimple Lala. This novel is often cited as a pioneering work, being one of the first South Asian American novels to feature an Indian-American protagonist, and draws heavily from the author's own life experiences. Beyond her novels, Hidier has also released musical accompaniments, referred to as "booktracks," for her books. She has also engaged in filmmaking, writing and directing short films.

Hidier has also ventured into filmmaking, contributing as a writer and director to short films such as "The Test" and co-writing and co-directing "The Assimilation Alphabet." Her collaborative work also includes being part of the musical group T&A with Atom Fellows.
