Swami Sivananda Saraswati, born Kuppuswami in 1887, was a prominent yoga guru and a proponent of Vedanta philosophy. After studying medicine and practicing as a physician in British Malaya for a decade, he felt a calling for spiritual pursuits and returned to India in 1923. He was initiated into monasticism in Rishikesh in 1924 by his guru Vishvananda Saraswati. Sivananda established the Divine Life Society in 1936, dedicated to distributing spiritual literature. He also founded the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy and authored over 200 books covering yoga, Vedanta, and various other subjects. His teachings emphasized a synthesis of different yoga paths. Early Life and Spiritual Awakening
Born Kuppuswami in Tamil Nadu in 1887 to a religious family, Swami Sivananda displayed academic and athletic promise from a young age. He pursued medical studies and later served as a doctor in British Malaya for ten years. During his medical practice, he developed a sense that conventional medicine addressed only superficial ailments, prompting him to seek deeper spiritual understanding. He also established the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy and authored a vast number of books. Sivananda termed his approach the 'Yoga of Synthesis,' integrating Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja Yoga, aiming for a holistic spiritual practice.

Swami Sivananda was a dynamic proponent of his teachings, undertaking extensive tours across India to establish branches of the Divine Life Society and promote his vision of yoga. He utilized modern methods for outreach, earning him the nickname 'Swami Propagandananda.' His teachings advocated for a comprehensive approach to yoga, combining physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and devotion.
