Liu Zheng

Liu Ying, born in February 1974, is a Chinese author known for her novels and short stories that delve into the experiences of women in contemporary China, viewed through the lens of historical, political, and economic shifts. Her literary journey began after a period of illness, leading to the publication of her collection "Attic" in 2002, which quickly became a success and marked the start of her writing career.

"Attic" was adapted into a film in 2004. Liu Ying continued to publish, releasing her first full-length novel, "Ghost Tree," in 2006. She became a member of the China Writers Association and studied at the Lu Xun Literary Institute. After moving back to Zhejiang and settling in Hangzhou, she later immigrated to the United States in 2012 to further her literary pursuits. Her 2019 novel "Sister" saw significant demand, requiring reprints shortly after its release.

Born in February 1974 in Longyou County, Zhejiang, Liu Ying hailed from a working-class background and had an older sister and a younger brother. Her path to becoming a writer was unconventional, stemming from a period of personal hardship. In 2001, at the age of 27, she faced challenges with depression and a severe disc herniation. This confinement led her to begin writing novels. The following year, her collection of short stories titled "Attic" was published, achieving immediate popularity and launching her literary career. The success of "Attic" was further cemented when it was adapted into a Chinese film in 2004.

Following the breakthrough success of "Attic," Liu Ying published her first long novel, "Ghost Tree," in 2006. Her commitment to her craft was recognized when she joined the China Writers Association in 2005 and subsequently attended the Lu Xun Literary Institute in Beijing. After returning to her home province of Zhejiang and establishing residence in Hangzhou, Liu Ying made a significant move in 2012, immigrating to the United States. This relocation was motivated by her desire to continue and expand her literary career on an international stage. Her 2019 novel, "Sister," demonstrated continued readership engagement, selling out and necessitating second printings within two months of its release.
