John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish writer, historian, soldier, and statesman. Born in 1875, he began his literary career early, publishing his first novel in 1895 and going on to write over a hundred books, with "The Thirty-Nine Steps" being his most famous.

Educated at Glasgow and Oxford universities, Buchan initially pursued a career as a barrister before moving into journalism and publishing. His career encompassed significant roles during World War I, including Director of Information and Head of Intelligence. He later entered politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities. In 1935, he was appointed Governor General of Canada, a position he held until his death in 1940, during which he advocated for Canadian unity. After completing his legal studies, Buchan served as private secretary to Lord Milner in South Africa, an experience that informed his writing. Buchan's involvement in public life intensified during World War I, where he held key positions in intelligence and propaganda, including Director of Information. He continued to write extensively, including his well-known thriller "The Thirty-Nine Steps" and a multi-volume history of the war. His literary and journalistic work often explored themes of adventure and espionage, reflecting his engagement with the events of his time.

Political Career and Governorship of Canada

Buchan entered politics as a Unionist Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927. His political views evolved, and he expressed admiration for Gladstone's philosophy. He also became a prominent supporter of Zionism, actively condemning the treatment of Jews in Germany and advocating for a Jewish state. In 1935, he was appointed Governor General of Canada, a role in which he championed national unity and constitutional sovereignty. He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Tweedsmuir. He served in Canada until his death in 1940, receiving a state funeral.
