John X bar Shushan was Patriarch of Antioch, leading the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1063/1064 to 1072/1073, known for his theological writings and defense of church practices.

John X bar Shushan, born Yeshu in Melitene in the early 11th century, served as the Patriarch of Antioch and head of the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1063/1064 until his death in 1072/1073. He received his education in philology, philosophy, and religion, later becoming a monk and studying under Patriarch John IX bar ʿAbdun, for whom he served as secretary. His initial election as patriarch in 1057 was contested by Western bishops, leading to his abdication in favor of Athanasius V. Following Athanasius's death in 1063/1064, John was reinstated as patriarch.

Throughout his leadership, John primarily resided in Amid, also spending time in Harran and Maypherqat, locations under Muslim rule, to evade persecution from the Eastern Roman Empire. His patriarchate saw tensions with other non-Chalcedonian leaders due to criticism of the church's practices. In response, John authored a defense of these practices and corresponded with other religious figures, including the Armenian Catholicos Gregory II and Coptic Pope Christodoulos of Alexandria, to address specific criticisms, such as the mixing of salt and oil with sacramental bread.

Patriarchal Tenure and Challenges

John X bar Shushan's time as Patriarch of Antioch, from 1063/1064 to 1072/1073, was marked by significant internal and external pressures. His initial election in 1057 was met with opposition from a faction of Western bishops, who successfully installed their own candidate, Athanasius V. This dispute necessitated John's temporary withdrawal from the patriarchal office until Athanasius's death. Upon his restoration, John established his primary residence in Amid, a strategic choice to navigate the political landscape under Muslim rule and avoid persecution from the Eastern Roman Empire. His leadership also coincided with a period of scrutiny regarding the Syriac Orthodox Church's rituals and doctrines, prompting John to actively engage in theological discourse to defend its traditions.

Theological and Canonical Writings

A significant aspect of John X bar Shushan's legacy lies in his extensive literary output, which addressed theological, canonical, and liturgical concerns. He composed substantial works, including seven books of propitiatory prayers, known in Syriac as 'ḥusoye'. His writings also reflected contemporary events, such as four books of poetry lamenting the Turkish sack of Melitene in 1058. Furthermore, John authored an anaphora, a key liturgical text. His efforts to defend the church extended to polemical works, including treatises aimed at refuting tenets of Islam and challenging the Melkite church of Antioch, alongside his direct correspondence with other church leaders on matters of doctrine and practice.
