Elizabeth Clare Prophet

Elizabeth Clare Prophet, born Elizabeth Clare Wulf in 1939, was an American spiritual leader and author who established the Church Universal and Triumphant, a New Age religious organization. Her teachings synthesized elements from mysticism, Christianity, and Eastern religions, attracting an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 followers at their peak. Prophet authored numerous books on spirituality and gained recognition within New Age communities.

In the late 1980s, Prophet predicted an imminent nuclear war, leading her and her followers to prepare by stockpiling resources and constructing fallout shelters on their Montana compound. This period also involved an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms due to the firearms and supplies. Following the non-occurrence of the predicted apocalypse, the church experienced a decline in membership. Prophet eventually stepped down from operational leadership in 1996 and retired in 1999 due to health reasons, though her recorded teachings continue to influence the church.

Born Elizabeth Clare Wulf in 1939, Prophet's early life in New Jersey was marked by significant events, including her father's internment during World War II and his struggles with alcoholism and abuse. These experiences, coupled with her conviction about the reality of evil stemming from the Holocaust, influenced her academic pursuit of political science. Prophet reported experiencing periodic blackouts, initially diagnosed as epilepsy, which she believed were a means of escaping her father's rages. She also claimed early mystical experiences, including visions of past lives and feelings of divine presence, which fueled her belief in the universality of true religion and her interest in spiritual exploration. Her mother's engagement with Theosophy, the I AM Activity, and Christian Science introduced her to concepts like Ascended Masters, Karma, and Reincarnation, shaping her early spiritual framework.

Prophet's spiritual path led her to meet Mark L. Prophet, who taught about the Ascended Masters. In 1961, she experienced a profound realization of her role as a messenger for higher teachings, joining Mark's organization, The Summit Lighthouse. After their marriage and Mark's death in 1973, Elizabeth Clare Prophet assumed leadership. She established the Church Universal and Triumphant, relocating its headquarters to a large compound near Gardiner, Montana, in 1986. The church's doctrine, the "Path of Personal Christhood," emphasized a direct relationship with God through Christ consciousness. Prophet also taught the "Science of the Spoken Word," a practice involving sound, meditation, prayer, and visualization, which she believed could lead to divine union.

In 1987, Prophet initiated "Operation Christ Command," predicting a nuclear war and urging followers to relocate to Montana and prepare by building nuclear fallout shelters. This led to the construction of a large shelter on the church's property and an investigation by the ATF concerning stockpiled firearms and ammunition. The predicted nuclear holocaust did not occur, leading to a significant loss of members. The church also faced environmental issues due to leaking fuel storage tanks, which halted construction and drew regulatory attention. Despite these events, the church continued its activities, with Prophet stepping down from operational leadership in 1996 and retiring in 1999, leaving a legacy of recorded sermons that remain influential.
