Beatrice Bruteau

Beatrice Bruteau (1930–2014) was an American thinker known for her contributions to interspirituality and contemplative philosophy. Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Missouri, she pursued graduate studies in philosophy at Fordham University, earning her Ph.D. in 1954. Bruteau's academic work aimed to bridge diverse fields, including science, mathematics, philosophy, and religion, by examining mystical and contemplative traditions from Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism.

Her prolific writing career included twelve books and numerous articles. Among her notable works are "Radical Optimism: Rooting Ourselves in Reality" (1993), which linked contemplative practice to authentic self-knowledge and optimism, and "The Other Half of My Soul" (1996), a collection of essays on Bede Griffiths that featured a foreword by the Dalai Lama. In "God's Ecstasy: The Creation of a Self-Creating World" (1997), she explored how scientific understanding could inform spirituality. Bruteau also co-edited the journal "American Vedantist" and co-founded Schola Contemplatonis, a network for contemplatives, with her husband James Somerville.
