The Odes of Solomon is a compilation of 42 hymns, traditionally but anonymously attributed to King Solomon. Scholarly consensus places their composition between 70 and 125 AD, with the original language believed to be Syriac or Aramaic, possibly originating from the Syrian region. Many scholars propose the author was a Jewish Christian, possibly a convert from the Essene community, due to similarities with Qumran texts and the Gospel of John.

The earliest surviving manuscripts date to the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD. These include fragments in Coptic and Greek, with the most complete Syriac manuscript discovered in the early 20th century. The Odes explore theological concepts such as the nature of Christ, the Trinity, predestination, and salvation through grace. They also contain significant imagery related to baptism, renewal, and spiritual initiation, leading some to suggest they were composed for liturgical purposes. While some scholars have debated a Gnostic influence, the prevailing view sees them as aligned with early proto-Orthodox Christian thought, albeit with unique Essene-influenced perspectives.

Before the 18th century, knowledge of the Odes was limited to Lactantius' quote and mentions in religious literature lists. The discovery of the Pistis Sophia in 1785, followed by James Rendel Harris's find of a Syriac manuscript in 1909 (the most complete extant text), and F. C. Burkitt's discovery of an older manuscript, the Codex Nitriensis, in 1912, significantly expanded scholarly access to the text.

The Odes of Solomon delve into various theological and mystical concepts. They emphasize a joyous thanksgiving for the Messiah's arrival and the experience of eternal life. The texts explore Christology, referring to Christ as the pre-existent Logos, the Son of God, and the Son of Man, and alluding to his virgin birth, crucifixion, and descent into Hades. Trinitarian theology is present, mentioning the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit without subordinationism. Baptismal themes are prominent, including renewal, new creation, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit, leading some to classify the Odes as baptismal hymns. The author also seems to express an understanding of the "priesthood of all believers" and affirms the immortality of the soul.
