Angelus Silesius

📅 1624 – 1677 🌍 German 📚 3 free books ⭐ Known for: Heilige Seelen-Lust (1657)

Johann Scheffler, later Angelus Silesius, was a German mystic poet and priest who converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism.

Johann Scheffler, who later adopted the name Angelus Silesius, was born around 1624 in Breslau into a Lutheran family. He pursued studies in medicine and science in various European universities, including Strasbourg, Leiden, and Padua. During his time in the Netherlands, he encountered the mystical writings of Jacob Böhme and befriended his associate Abraham von Franckenberg, which significantly influenced his spiritual development. His growing mystical beliefs and critical stance towards Lutheranism led to friction with authorities, prompting his conversion to Catholicism in 1653. Upon conversion, he took the name Angelus Silesius and later became a Franciscan priest. Silesius dedicated himself to promoting Catholicism in Silesia and authored numerous tracts against Protestantism. However, he is primarily remembered for his mystical poetry, particularly "Heilige Seelen-Lust" and "Cherubinischer Wandersmann," both published in 1657. These works, exploring themes of the divine, the Trinity, and the soul's connection to Christ, have been influential, though some passages have been interpreted as bordering on quietism or pantheism, which Silesius himself repudiated in favor of an orthodox Catholic understanding.

Early Life and Spiritual Awakening

Born Johann Scheffler in Breslau around 1624, his early life was shaped by his Lutheran upbringing. His father was of Polish noble descent and his mother came from a family with ties to the Habsburg court. Scheffler received his initial education at a gymnasium and later studied medicine and science at universities in Strasbourg and Leiden. It was during his studies in the Netherlands that he was introduced to the works of the mystic Jacob Böhme and met his friend Abraham von Franckenberg. This exposure, along with potential contact with Kabbalistic and Hermetic writings, profoundly impacted his spiritual path, moving him away from his Lutheran roots and towards a more mystical outlook. His academic pursuits culminated in a doctoral degree in philosophy and medicine from the University of Padua.

Conversion and Priesthood

Scheffler's burgeoning mystical experiences and his critical views on Lutheran doctrine created significant conflict with the Lutheran authorities and the Duke of Württemberg-Oels, for whom he served as court physician. Labeled a heretic by some, he sought refuge and converted to Catholicism in 1653, adopting the name Angelus Silesius. This conversion marked a decisive shift in his life, leading him to embrace a more active role within the Catholic Church. He was appointed Imperial Court Physician, though this was likely an honorary title. He entered the Franciscan order in 1661 and was ordained a priest. His conversion fueled his efforts to persuade Protestants in Silesia to return to the Catholic fold, leading him to write many polemical tracts against Protestantism.

Mystical Poetry and Legacy

Despite his theological writings and polemics, Angelus Silesius is best remembered for his profound mystical poetry. His two most significant collections, "Heilige Seelen-Lust" (The Soul's Holy Desires) and "Cherubinischer Wandersmann" (The Cherubic Pilgrim), were published in 1657. "Cherubinischer Wandersmann," a collection of short poems often in Alexandrine couplets, delves into themes of God's grandeur, mystical interpretations of the Trinity, and the intimate relationship between the soul and Christ. While some of these poems contain paradoxes that have been interpreted as hinting at quietism or pantheism, Silesius himself clarified these in an orthodox Catholic sense, and "The Cherubic Pilgrim" received ecclesiastical approval. His poetry's brevity and intensity made it a suitable vehicle for expressing ineffable mystical experiences.
