Edgar Allan Poe was a pivotal American writer known for mystery, the macabre, and pioneering detective fiction.

Edgar Allan Poe, born in 1809, was an American writer, poet, and critic, recognized for his significant contributions to Romanticism and Gothic fiction. He is considered a pioneer in short story writing and the detective fiction genre, and his work also influenced the development of science fiction. Poe's life was marked by financial hardship, stemming from his decision to pursue writing as a sole profession. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by the Allan family, with whom he had a strained relationship, particularly with his foster father, John Allan, over financial matters and his gambling debts. Despite attending the University of Virginia and later West Point, his pursuits were cut short by these conflicts and financial difficulties. Poe married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm, who died of tuberculosis. His most famous poem, 'The Raven,' achieved instant success in 1845. Poe died in 1849 at the age of 40 under mysterious circumstances, with the cause of his death still debated.

Early Life and Education

Born Edgar Poe in Boston in 1809, he was the second child of actors David and Elizabeth Poe. His father left the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Young Edgar was then taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia, who provided him with a home but never formally adopted him. He was given the name Edgar Allan Poe and was baptized into the Episcopal Church. The family traveled to the United Kingdom, where Poe attended schools in Scotland and England. Upon returning to Richmond, he briefly served in a youth honor guard. He may have been engaged before attending the University of Virginia in 1826 to study languages. His time there was cut short due to financial issues and gambling debts, leading to estrangement from his foster father, John Allan. He then moved to Boston, supporting himself with various jobs.

Military Service and Literary Beginnings

Unable to support himself, Poe enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1827 under the assumed name Edgar A. Perry, though he was only 18. During his service, his first collection of poems, 'Tamerlane and Other Poems,' was published anonymously. He rose to the rank of sergeant major before seeking an early discharge. He was honorably discharged after reconciling with John Allan, who had been largely unsympathetic. Poe's foster mother, Frances Allan, died during this period. He then prepared to enter the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Before his admission, he lived in Baltimore with his aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter Virginia. He also received early encouragement for his poetry from critic John Neal, leading to his second book, 'Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems'.

West Point and Literary Career

Poe matriculated at West Point in 1830. His foster father, John Allan, remarried and had children, leading to further conflict and Allan ultimately disowning Poe. To leave West Point, Poe intentionally court-martialed himself for neglect of duty and disobedience. After his dismissal in 1831, he moved to New York and published a third volume of poems, 'Poems,' financed partly by his fellow cadets. He returned to Baltimore, where he focused on prose, working for literary journals and developing his critical style. This period involved moves to various cities, including Philadelphia and New York. He married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836. His poem 'The Raven' was published in 1845 to great acclaim. Poe died in Baltimore in 1849 at age 40, under circumstances that remain unclear.
