Where the word comes from

The term "Veda" derives from the Sanskrit root vid, meaning "to know" or "knowledge." It signifies sacred knowledge or wisdom. The four principal Vedas (Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda) are believed to have been revealed to ancient sages, not authored by humans.

In depth

Jachin (Ilcb.). '"In Hebrew h-tters IKIX, from the root KUN "to establish", and the symbolical name of one of the Pilhirs at the porch of King Solomon's Temple." [w.w.w.] The other pillar was called Boaz, and the two were respectively white and black. They correspond to several mystic ideas, one of which is that they represent the dual Manas or the higher and the lower Ego ; another connected these two pillars in Slavonian mysticism with God and the Devil, to the "White" and the Black God" or Bijdon Bog and Tchernoy Bog. (See "Yakin and Boaz" infra).

How different paths see it

Hindu
The Vedas are the bedrock of Hinduism, containing the earliest expressions of its theology, cosmology, and ritual practices. They are considered shruti, divinely revealed texts, and are revered as the ultimate authority on spiritual matters.

What it means today

The Vedas, a vast corpus of ancient Indian literature, are more than just scriptures; they are the very breath of a civilization grappling with the mysteries of existence. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, these texts, primarily hymns and sacrificial formulas, pulsate with a primal energy, an early human attempt to commune with the divine forces perceived in nature. Mircea Eliade, in his seminal works on religion, highlights how such ancient texts often serve as blueprints for cosmic order, mapping the relationship between the human and the divine. The hymns of the Rigveda, for instance, are not mere devotional outpourings but sophisticated invocations, designed to appease and engage the gods, thereby influencing the course of events.

The philosophical underpinnings, particularly evident in the Upanishads, which are considered the concluding portions of the Vedas, move beyond ritual to explore the nature of reality, consciousness, and the self. This transition from the external, ritualistic focus of the earlier Vedas to the introspective inquiry of the Upanishads mirrors a universal trajectory in spiritual development, a movement from the immanent to the transcendent. Carl Jung's exploration of archetypes and the collective unconscious resonates here, as the recurring motifs and symbols within the Vedas speak to fundamental human experiences and aspirations that transcend temporal and cultural boundaries. The Vedas, therefore, offer a window into the genesis of one of the world's oldest living traditions, a testament to the enduring human impulse to seek meaning in the face of the infinite. Their continued study provides not just historical insight but a potent source of wisdom for contemporary seekers wrestling with timeless questions.
