Citrinitas
Citrinitas, or yellowness, is the third stage in the alchemical Great Work, following blackness (nigredo) and whiteness (albedo). It signifies the dawning of inner spiritual light, a transition from the passive receptivity of albedo to an active, solar illumination, preceding the final stage of redness (rubedo).
Where the word comes from
The term "Citrinitas" derives from the Latin "citrinus," meaning "lemon-yellow" or "citrine." It first appears within alchemical literature as a distinct phase of the magnum opus, representing a specific color transformation in the process of material and spiritual transmutation.
In depth
Citrinitas, or sometimes xanthosis, is a term given by alchemists to "yellowness." It is one of the four major stages of the alchemical magnum opus. In alchemical philosophy, citrinitas stood for the dawning of the "solar light" inherent in one's being, and that the reflective "lunar or soul light" was no longer necessary. The other three alchemical stages were nigredo (blackness), albedo (whiteness), and rubedo (redness). Psychologist Carl Jung is credited with interpreting the alchemical process...
How different paths see it
What it means today
The alchemical stages, as enumerated by practitioners and later interpreted by figures like Carl Jung, offer a potent metaphor for psychological and spiritual maturation. Citrinitas, the "yellowness," arrives after the profound darkness of the nigredo and the cleansing whiteness of the albedo. It is the stage where the raw materials of the psyche, having been broken down and purified, begin to coalesce into a new form, illuminated from within. This is not the stark, unadorned light of pure spirit, but a warmer, more active luminescence, often associated with the sun.
Mircea Eliade, in his studies of alchemy, highlights how these color transformations were not merely symbolic but were believed to correspond to observable changes in the alchemical retort, suggesting a deep integration of the material and the spiritual. The yellowing of the substance was seen as a sign that the prima materia was becoming receptive to the final, transformative heat, the calcinatio and solutio having paved the way for this dawning awareness. In psychological terms, Citrinitas can be understood as the emergence of a more integrated self, where the unconscious insights gained during the preceding stages begin to manifest as a conscious, vibrant understanding. It is the moment the seeker recognizes the inherent radiance of their own being, a light that is both personal and universal, like the sun's warmth touching all things. This stage precedes the final rubedo, the reddening, which signifies the full realization of the Philosopher's Stone, the perfected state. Citrinitas, therefore, is the promise of that completion, the radiant dawn before the full blaze of noon. It is the nascent wisdom, the dawning of the solar consciousness within the alchemical vessel of the self.
