Where the word comes from

The English word "caste" derives from the Portuguese "casta," meaning "breed, lineage, or race," first appearing in the 16th century in descriptions of the Indian social system. It is not a direct translation of the Sanskrit term "varna," which signifies "color" or "class."

How different paths see it

Hindu
The varna system, foundational to Hindu society, assigns roles and duties based on perceived purity and karma. While originally fluid, it ossified into the rigid caste system, influencing religious practice, social interaction, and marriage.

What it means today

The concept of caste, particularly as it manifested in the Indian subcontinent, presents a profound study in the stratification of human society. Blavatsky's definition, though rooted in the historical four varnas (Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra), acknowledges the proliferation of sub-castes, a testament to the system's complex and often oppressive evolution. The Sanskrit term varna, meaning "color," hints at an initial, perhaps more fluid, categorization that later hardened into a hereditary system of social immobility.

Mircea Eliade, in his exploration of sacred and secular time, might see the caste system as an attempt to impose a cosmic order onto the mundane, a divinely ordained structure where each individual's place is predetermined, mirroring the celestial spheres. This rigidity, however, stands in stark contrast to the non-dualistic currents within various spiritual traditions. While Hinduism itself contains the seeds of Advaita Vedanta, which posits the ultimate unity of all beings, the practical application of caste often created profound divisions, hindering the realization of this unity in lived experience.

The esoteric pursuit often involves transcending such societal constructs, recognizing that the true self, the Atman, is not bound by birth or social standing. The Sufi tradition, with its emphasis on the divine spark within every soul, and Christian mysticism, seeking the imago Dei in all humanity, similarly challenge any system that erects artificial barriers between individuals and their spiritual potential. The hermetic principle of "As Above, So Below" might be twisted to justify earthly hierarchies, but its deeper meaning points to an underlying interconnectedness that the caste system actively obscured. The modern seeker, confronting the echoes of such systems in contemporary social inequalities, finds in the critique of caste a reminder that true spiritual progress lies in recognizing the inherent dignity and interconnectedness of all. The challenge remains to dismantle the artificial walls we build, both within ourselves and in society, to perceive the singular essence that animates all.
