William Wrede

William Wrede (1859-1906) was a German Lutheran theologian who made significant contributions to New Testament scholarship. Born in Bücken, he held academic positions as an associate and full professor in Breslau. Wrede is particularly renowned for his groundbreaking work on the 'Messianic Secret' in the Gospel of Mark. He proposed that the secrecy surrounding Jesus' identity was a literary and apologetic strategy employed by the Gospel's author to reconcile the lack of explicit messianic claims with the belief in Jesus as the Messiah. According to his theory, Jesus' messiahship was kept hidden among his close followers.

Wrede also critically examined other New Testament texts, including arguing for the inauthenticity of the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians. In his influential study of the Apostle Paul, titled 'Paulus,' Wrede asserted that Paul was pivotal to Christianity's development, suggesting that without him, it might have remained a minor Jewish sect. He posited that Paul was the "second founder of Christianity." Wrede further explored Paul's background, suggesting significant Hellenistic influences on his thought, particularly concerning the dualism of flesh and spirit, which he interpreted through a Hellenistic lens of inherent corruption in matter.

William Wrede's most famous contribution to biblical studies is his analysis of the 'Messianic Secret' in the Gospel of Mark. He argued that the phenomenon of Jesus instructing people not to reveal his identity was not a historical occurrence but a literary device. Wrede suggested that the author of Mark used this concept as an apologetic tool to explain why Jesus, believed to be the Messiah, did not openly claim this title during his lifetime. He contended that Paul's influence was so profound that without his efforts, Christianity might have simply faded into obscurity as a small Jewish sect with limited historical impact. Wrede famously described Paul as 'the second founder of Christianity,' highlighting his crucial role in transforming Jesus' movement into a distinct religion with a wider reach. In this interpretation, 'flesh' was seen as inherently flawed or corrupt, a concept prevalent in some Hellenistic philosophies that viewed physical matter itself as problematic, thereby influencing Paul's theological anthropology.
