Cheiro ( William John Warner)

William John Warner, known by his pseudonym Cheiro, was an Irish figure prominent in occult circles during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He claimed to have learned palmistry, astrology, and Chaldean numerology in India, where he studied ancient texts on palm reading. Cheiro achieved widespread recognition for his abilities in divination, offering personal predictions to a notable clientele and foreseeing global events. His fame extended to both European and American elites, who sought his interpretations of their hands and futures. He meticulously documented his readings, encouraging famous clients to record their experiences in his guest book. Cheiro's work also included a fictional narrative and numerous books on occult subjects, many of which remain in print.

Born William John Warner in Ireland, he later adopted the name Count Louis Hamon. According to his own accounts, Cheiro's foundational knowledge in esoteric arts was acquired during his youth in India. He traveled to Bombay and met a guru who introduced him to palmistry. He spent two years studying an ancient book on hands with Brahmans in the Konkan region of Maharashtra before returning to London to begin his career. This period of study in India formed the basis of his later practices and writings on palmistry and related occult disciplines.

Cheiro became a highly sought-after palmist and astrologer, serving a distinguished clientele that included prominent figures of his time such as Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Sarah Bernhardt, and members of royalty. He used his skills to analyze character and make predictions, both personal and global. Notable among his predictions was the foretelling of the return of Jews to Palestine and its renaming as Israel. He also famously advised William Pirrie, chairman of the Titanic's builders, that he would soon face a fight for his life, alluding to the ship's tragic sinking. His reputation was such that even skeptics sought his readings, with many clients like Mark Twain and Ella Wheeler Wilcox attesting to his uncanny accuracy in his guest book.

Beyond his practice, Cheiro authored several books focused on fortune-telling and occultism, many of which continue to be published. His bibliography includes works on numerology, such as 'Cheiro's Book of Numbers,' and extensive guides to palmistry, including 'Cheiro's Language of the Hand' and 'Palmistry for All.' He also wrote on astrology, with titles like 'Cheiro's You and Your Star: The Book of the Zodiac,' and 'Cheiro's Book of World Predictions.' His fictional work, 'A Study of Destiny,' was reissued in 2006, highlighting its place within 19th-century speculative fiction. Cheiro's writings and predictions cemented his legacy as a significant, albeit colorful, figure in the history of Western esotericism.
