John Watkins was an English writer known for biographical dictionaries and other historical and literary works.

John Watkins, active in England from 1792 to 1831, was a prolific writer known for his biographical and historical compilations. He began his intellectual journey in Devon, receiving education for the nonconformist ministry, but later transitioned to the Church of England. For a period, he managed an academy before relocating to London, where he took on editorial duties for the Orthodox Churchman's Magazine. His most significant contribution is widely considered to be An Universal Biographical and Historical Dictionary, first published in 1800 and undergoing several revisions and translations. Watkins also authored numerous other works, including essays, historical accounts, and biographies of notable figures, demonstrating a wide range of literary interests.

Early Life and Education

Born in Devon, John Watkins received his initial education in preparation for a career in the nonconformist ministry. However, he later experienced a change of heart regarding his religious path. Around 1786, he joined the Church of England, a decision made with the assistance of his friend Samuel Badcock. Following this transition, Watkins spent several years operating an academy in his home county of Devon. His move to London marked the beginning of his extensive writing career, likely commencing around 1794.

Literary Career and Major Works

Watkins's independent writing career began in 1792 with the publication of 'An Essay towards the History of Bideford'. This work included historical records, such as depositions from a 1682 witchcraft trial. He later published 'The Peeper: a collection of Essays, Moral, Biographical, and Literary' in 1796, which was dedicated to Hannah More. His most renowned publication, however, was 'An Universal Biographical and Historical Dictionary', first released in 1800. This comprehensive dictionary went through multiple editions, with the last appearing in 1827, and was also translated into French. He also served as the editor for the Orthodox Churchman's Magazine.

Other Notable Publications

Beyond his dictionary, Watkins produced a diverse array of writings. These included 'Scripture Biography' (1801), which saw several editions, and 'Characteristic Anecdotes of Men of Learning and Genius' (1808). His biographical interests extended to figures like Richard Brinsley Sheridan, for whom he wrote the first biography to appear after the playwright's death in 1816, and Lord Byron in 1822. He also compiled memoirs of Queen Sophia Charlotte and Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. Additionally, Watkins engaged in translation, rendering George Buchanan's 'History of Scotland' from Latin into English in 1827, and penned a memoir of Hugh Latimer.
