Walter Russell was an American artist, philosopher, and author known for his unique cosmogony and contributions to the Science of Man Movement.

Walter Russell (1871–1963) was a multifaceted American figure, excelling as an impressionist painter, sculptor, philosopher, and author. Despite early challenges, including leaving school at a young age, he pursued artistic and intellectual endeavors, studying in both Boston and Paris. His career spanned various fields, from creating successful cooperative apartment buildings in New York City to gaining recognition for his allegorical paintings and portrait busts. Russell also served as a motivational speaker for IBM for over a decade.

Russell's philosophical and scientific ideas, particularly his theories on a unified universe and the nature of light and magnetism, were presented in numerous books and lectures. While these concepts did not achieve widespread acceptance within the scientific community of his time, they formed the basis of the Science of Man Movement, of which he became a prominent leader as president of the Society of Arts and Sciences. He later founded the University of Science and Philosophy with his wife, Lao Russell, to disseminate his teachings.

Artistic and Professional Achievements

Born in 1871, Walter Russell's early life was marked by self-education and a dedication to art. He studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and briefly at the Académie Julian in Paris, receiving tutelage from notable artists. His artistic career quickly gained momentum after settling in New York City in 1894, achieving significant recognition with his 1900 allegorical painting, 'The Might of Ages.' Beyond painting, Russell made a substantial impact as a developer, pioneering the concept of cooperative apartment ownership and contributing to significant New York buildings like the Hotel des Artistes. He also demonstrated his talent as a sculptor, creating busts of prominent figures and receiving commissions for memorials.

Philosophical and Scientific Pursuits

Russell's intellectual journey led him to explore philosophy, sociology, and science, culminating in the development of his unique cosmogony. Following a profound personal experience in 1921, which he described as an 'illumination,' Russell began articulating his theories about the universe. He proposed that science had erred by excluding the Creator from its understanding of creation, defining God as an invisible, unconditioned 'white Magnetic Light of Mind.' He believed that religion and science were destined to converge in a new era. His ideas, though not widely embraced by contemporary scientists, were central to his leadership in the Science of Man Movement and were detailed in works like 'The Universal One' and 'A New Concept of the Universe.'

Later Life and Legacy

In his later years, Russell, alongside his second wife Lao Russell, established the University of Science and Philosophy in Swannanoa, Virginia. This institution served as a center for his teachings and offered a home study course based on his philosophies. Together, they authored several books, including 'Atomic Suicide?', which warned about the dangers of exploiting radioactivity. Russell's work aimed to bridge the perceived gap between science and spirituality, presenting a vision of a universe governed by divine principles accessible through understanding. He passed away in 1963, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be studied within certain philosophical and esoteric circles.

Key Ideas

  • Cosmogony centered on a divine, unconditioned 'white Magnetic Light of Mind' as the fundamental reality.
  • The integration of science and religion into a unified understanding of the universe.
  • The concept of 'illumination' as a state of cosmic awareness.
  • The universe operates on principles of continuous motion and cyclic theory.
  • Critique of contemporary science for excluding a divine creator from its models.
