Virginia Hamilton

Virginia Hamilton was an American author who wrote 41 books for children and young adults, gaining recognition for her exploration of the African-American experience, a style she termed "Liberation Literature." Her career began with the publication of "Zeely" in 1967 and included numerous accolades. She received prestigious awards such as the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for "M. C. Higgins, the Great" in 1975, becoming the first Black author to win the Newbery. Hamilton also earned international honors, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. The American Library Association established the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award in her honor, recognizing significant contributions to children's literature by African American creators. Born Virginia Esther Hamilton on March 12, 1936, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, she was the youngest of five children. Her parents, Kenneth James and Etta Perry Belle, fostered a love for reading and writing within the family. Hamilton attended Antioch College on a scholarship before transferring to Ohio State University. She later moved to New York City, where she met and married poet Arnold Adoff in 1960. The couple eventually returned to Ohio, settling on the farm where Hamilton grew up. While raising their two children, Hamilton dedicated herself to writing, launching her prolific career with the publication of "Zeely" in 1967, which was recognized by the American Library Association.
