Vanda Scaravelli

📅 1908 – 1999 📚 2 free books ⭐ Known for: Awakening the Spine (1991)

Vanda Scaravelli was a yoga practitioner whose teachings emphasized breath, gravity, and the spine, influencing Western yoga.

Vanda Scaravelli (1908-1999) made significant contributions to yoga in the West. She began her yoga journey in her 50s, studying with students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. B. K. S. Iyengar instructed her in yoga postures (asanas), while T. K. V. Desikachar guided her in breathwork (pranayama). After her teachers departed Europe, Scaravelli developed her own practice, focusing on the interplay of breath, gravity, and the spine. This unique approach was further refined with the assistance of her long-term students, Diane Long and Esther Myers, who have continued to evolve her non-lineage yoga style.

Scaravelli requested that no yoga school be named after her, though some teachers continue to offer classes described as 'Scaravelli-inspired yoga'. Her book, 'Awakening the Spine,' published in 1991, is considered a classic and explores her approach to yoga for health and vitality. Scaravelli's background was rich in the arts and music; her family home in Florence served as a gathering place for prominent musicians and artists, and she herself was trained as a concert pianist. Her life was also touched by philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, a family friend, who played a role in her introduction to yoga.

Early Life and Musical Background

Born in Florence in 1908, Vanda Scaravelli came from a family deeply involved in the arts. Her father, Alberto Passigli, was instrumental in establishing the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Orchestra Stabile of Florence. Her mother, Clara Corsi, was an educator and one of the first women to earn a university degree in Italy. Vanda began piano lessons at age three and pursued a career as a concert pianist, studying under Ernesto Consolo. Music remained a lifelong passion. The family's Florentine villa, Il Leccio, was a vibrant hub for artists and musicians, frequented by renowned figures like Pablo Casals, Andres Segovia, and Arturo Toscanini.

Introduction to Yoga and Personal Practice

As a child, Vanda met the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, who became a close family friend. Through Krishnamurti and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, another family associate, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, the pioneer of modern yoga, was invited to Scaravelli's home in Gstaad, Switzerland. Krishnamacharya sent his students, B. K. S. Iyengar and T. K. V. Desikachar, to teach. Iyengar focused on asanas (postures), while Desikachar introduced her to pranayama (breath awareness). Scaravelli commenced her yoga practice in her fifties. Following the departure of her teachers from Europe, she independently developed her own yoga approach, emphasizing the interconnectedness of breath, gravity, and the spine.

Legacy and Influence

Vanda Scaravelli's seminal work, 'Awakening the Spine,' published in 1991, was recognized as a classic by Yoga Journal. She deliberately requested that no yoga school be named in her honor, seeking to avoid the establishment of a rigid lineage. Despite this wish, her teachings have inspired a style known as 'Scaravelli-inspired yoga,' which continues to be taught by practitioners such as Esther Myers. Her long-term students, Diane Long and Esther Myers, were instrumental in the ongoing evolution of her unique, non-lineage yoga method, ensuring its transmission into the 21st century.

Key Ideas

  • Emphasis on the spine's natural alignment and movement
  • Integration of breath awareness (pranayama) with physical postures (asanas)
  • Understanding the role of gravity in yoga practice
