Thích Nhất Hạnh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, peace activist, and prolific author who founded the Plum Village Tradition and popularized mindfulness.

Thích Nhất Hạnh, born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo in 1926, was a Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk, peace activist, poet, and influential teacher. He is widely recognized as a key figure in the development of engaged Buddhism and is credited with popularizing mindfulness practices in the West, earning him the title "father of mindfulness." Nhất Hạnh founded the Plum Village Tradition and established numerous monasteries and practice centers globally. His activism during the Vietnam War led to his exile from South Vietnam in 1966. He was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967. Nhất Hạnh advocated for deep listening as a conflict resolution method and emphasized the interconnectedness of all things for promoting peace. After decades of exile, he was permitted to return to Vietnam, where he lived until his passing in 2022 at the age of 95.

Early Life and Spiritual Awakening

Born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo in 1926 in Huế, Vietnam, Thích Nhất Hạnh came from a lineage that included the poet Nguyễn Đình Chiểu. His early life was shaped by his family and a profound childhood experience at age seven or eight. After encountering a depiction of a peaceful Buddha and visiting a hermit known for his deep stillness, he felt a calling to the monastic life. This aspiration, initially met with caution by his parents, led him to enter monastic training at the age of 16 at Từ Hiếu Temple.

Monastic Training and Intellectual Development

At Từ Hiếu Temple, Nhất Hạnh trained under Zen Master Thanh Quý Chân Thật, delving into Mahayana and Theravada Buddhist traditions. He also acquired proficiency in Chinese, English, and French. Dissatisfied with the Báo Quốc Buddhist Academy, he later moved to Saigon, was ordained as a monk in 1951, and pursued studies in literature, philosophy, psychology, and science at Saigon University. He served as editor for the publication "Vietnamese Buddhism," but his progressive views led to opposition and eventual disownment from his temple. Facing further resistance, he accepted a Fulbright Fellowship to study comparative religion at Princeton University and later lectured at Columbia and Cornell Universities, demonstrating a broad multilingual and academic foundation.

Engaged Buddhism and Peace Activism

Nhất Hạnh became a prominent voice for peace during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to South Vietnam in 1963, he was instrumental in restructuring Vietnamese Buddhism and advocating for an end to the conflict. He co-founded the School of Youth for Social Services (SYSS), a large corps of Buddhist peace workers dedicated to aiding war-torn communities. His efforts to promote reconciliation and his criticism of the war led to his exile in 1966. During this period, he coined the term "engaged Buddhism" and continued to teach and write, emphasizing nonviolent solutions and the interconnectedness of all beings and environments.

Later Life and Legacy

After 39 years of exile, Nhất Hạnh was allowed to visit Vietnam in 2005 and eventually returned to his "root temple" in 2018. He spent his final years at Từ Hiếu Temple, continuing his teachings until his death in 2022. He established the Plum Village Tradition, which has become a significant global network of monasteries and practice centers. Known worldwide as a "father of mindfulness," his teachings on mindful living, deep listening, and compassionate action have profoundly influenced Western Buddhism and continue to resonate with people seeking peace and understanding.
