Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022) was a significant figure in Eastern Orthodoxy, recognized as a monk and poet who received the rare title of 'Theologian.' This title was not for academic study but for those who spoke from direct, personal experience of divine vision. A central tenet of his teaching was the belief that individuals could and should experience theoria, the direct apprehension of God. Born into nobility, Symeon received a good education and, at a young age, was influenced by the elder monk Symeon the Studite to pursue a life of prayer and asceticism. He eventually became the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mamas, where his reputation for sanctity attracted many, though his radical teachings also led to conflict with church authorities and eventual exile.

Symeon is noted as one of the first Eastern Christian mystics to openly share his personal encounters with the divine, often describing his experiences of God as a luminous presence. His writings, some of which appear in the Philokalia, stressed the importance of experiencing God's grace directly and the necessity of guidance from a spiritual father. His teachings drew heavily from the traditions of the Desert Fathers. Despite facing opposition from figures like Archbishop Stephen, who favored theoretical theology over experiential spirituality, Symeon maintained that true spiritual authority stemmed from direct encounters with the Holy Spirit.

Symeon the New Theologian's primary contribution lies in his emphasis on the direct, personal experience of God, a concept termed 'theoria.' He taught that this direct apprehension of the divine was not only possible but essential for spiritual life, distinguishing his approach from purely academic theological study. His own mystical experiences, often described as encounters with divine light, formed the basis of his teachings. Influenced by his spiritual father, Symeon the Studite, Symeon the New Theologian embraced a life dedicated to prayer and asceticism. He underscored the critical role of a spiritual father in guiding one's path, a principle deeply rooted in the traditions of the Desert Fathers. Symeon's own journey involved rigorous spiritual discipline, and as abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mamas, he sought to instill a similar strict monastic life focused on simplicity, purity of heart, and constant prayer. This zealous approach, while attracting many, also led to internal conflict within the monastery and eventual exile, highlighting the challenges of implementing profound spiritual reform.

Symeon's emphasis on direct spiritual experience led to significant clashes with established church authorities, particularly Archbishop Stephen. Stephen, representing a more traditional, theoretical approach to theology, found Symeon's charismatic spirituality and belief in individual divine encounters to be problematic. Symeon countered that true heresy lay in denying the possibility of experiencing God directly. The conflict also extended to Symeon's veneration of his spiritual father, Symeon the Studite, which Stephen deemed inappropriate. This dispute, rooted in differing views on spiritual authority and experience, ultimately resulted in Symeon's exile.
