Stuart Holroyd was a British writer known for early association with the Angry Young Men and later prolific works on parapsychology and esoteric topics.

Stuart Holroyd (1933–2025) was a British author who initially gained recognition for his philosophical and critical writings during his association with contemporaries like Colin Wilson and Bill Hopkins. He was part of the literary milieu often labeled the Angry Young Men, contributing to the anthology 'Declaration' in 1957.

Holroyd's early career included his first book, 'Emergence from Chaos' (1957), a study of modern poets, followed by the autobiographical 'Flight and Pursuit' (1959). After a period of reduced publication, he shifted his focus to subjects such as parapsychology, extraterrestrial contact, sexual love, gnosticism, and the philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurti. He later characterized this later work as a compromise for commercial reasons.

His later memoir, 'His Dear Time's Waste' (2013), revisited his earlier experiences and writings. Holroyd's diverse body of work spanned literary criticism, autobiography, and explorations of paranormal phenomena and mystical traditions.

Early Literary Career and the Angry Young Men

Born in Bradford, Stuart Holroyd attended University College London briefly before embarking on his writing career. His first book, 'Emergence from Chaos', published in 1957, explored modern poets. This coincided with the release of Colin Wilson's 'The Outsider', a writer Holroyd was closely associated with, alongside novelist Bill Hopkins. Together, they were linked to the 'Angry Young Men' movement. Holroyd, Wilson, and Hopkins each contributed to 'Declaration' (1957), an anthology showcasing writers and artists associated with this label. Holroyd also had a play, 'The Tenth Chance', produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 1958, an event that reportedly led to notable public interactions with figures like Kenneth Tynan and Christopher Logue.

Shift to Esoteric and Paranormal Subjects

Following his early work, including the autobiographical 'Flight and Pursuit' (1959), Holroyd experienced a fourteen-year gap before publishing another book, apart from a textbook on English literature. His later publications saw him turn to a wide array of subjects, including the paranormal, parapsychology, encounters with extraterrestrial beings, gnosticism, and the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti. Holroyd himself later described this phase of his writing as a concession to the literary marketplace. His memoir 'Contraries; A Personal Progression' (1975) reflected on his earlier years, and a revised edition with added material was published as 'His Dear Time's Waste' in 2013.
