Stewart Ross

Jon Stewart, born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, is an American comedian, writer, producer, and television host recognized for his satirical news program, The Daily Show. He hosted the show from 1999 to 2015 and returned in 2024, also hosting The Problem with Jon Stewart on Apple TV+ from 2021 to 2023. Stewart began his career in stand-up comedy and later hosted various shows on MTV and Comedy Central. He has also appeared in films and co-authored satirical books.

Beyond his entertainment career, Stewart has been a prominent advocate for the health benefits of 9/11 first responders and war veterans. His efforts were instrumental in passing legislation that provides permanent authorization for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act and expands healthcare access for veterans exposed to toxic substances. Stewart's work has earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Peabody Awards.

Born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz in New York City, Jon Stewart's upbringing in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, was marked by his parents' divorce when he was eleven, leading to a strained relationship with his father and a subsequent change of surname to Stewart. His family is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Growing up during the Vietnam War and Watergate era instilled in him a healthy skepticism towards official narratives. He has cited television producer Norman Lear as an influence. Stewart attended the College of William & Mary, where he studied psychology and was a member of the men's soccer team. He held various jobs after college, including working at a nightclub called City Gardens, which he described as a pivotal experience that fostered a sense of shared yearning and creativity.

Stewart began his professional career in comedy, making his stand-up debut in 1987 and adopting the stage name Jon Stewart. He became a regular at the Comedy Cellar and worked as a writer for Caroline's Comedy Hour. His early television work included co-hosting Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater and hosting MTV's You Wrote It, You Watch It. A notable appearance on Late Night with David Letterman in 1992 is considered a turning point in his career. He went on to host The Jon Stewart Show on MTV, which later moved to syndication, and also guest-hosted The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder.

Stewart's most significant role began in 1999 when he took over as host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. During his tenure, the program achieved considerable popularity and critical acclaim, earning numerous awards. After departing The Daily Show in 2015, Stewart focused on advocacy, particularly for 9/11 first responders and veterans' health benefits.
