Stephen Cosgrove

Stephen E. Cosgrove, born in 1945, is an American author and toy designer recognized for his extensive work in children's literature. His career began in earnest in 1973 when he collaborated with illustrator Robin James to launch the Serendipity Series. Cosgrove's initial aim was to produce engaging, affordable books that imparted moral lessons. He founded his own publishing house, Serendipity Press, to maintain creative control after declining an offer from a major New York publisher. The Serendipity Press achieved significant success, selling over three million books before Cosgrove sold the company to Penguin/Putnam in 1978. He then shifted his focus to multimedia children's literature. Cosgrove has continued to innovate, creating interactive websites for children, such as Web-pop and BuggBooks, where stories can be read online or narrated by the author. To date, he has authored approximately 325 books, spanning picture books to young adult novels.

Born in Metaline Falls, Washington, Stephen Cosgrove spent his formative years in various locations across Washington and Idaho, including Kennewick, Burley, and Boise. During his childhood, Cosgrove found inspiration in classic tales, particularly Aesop's Fables, which likely shaped his understanding of storytelling and moral instruction. He pursued higher education on a scholarship, attending Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, starting in 1963. This early exposure to literature and education provided a foundation for his later career in writing for young audiences.

Cosgrove's literary career took off in 1973 with the creation of the Serendipity Series, beginning with four titles: "Serendipity," "Wheedle on the Needle," "The Dream Tree," and "The Muffin Muncher." These books, developed in partnership with illustrator Robin James, were designed to be entertaining, accessible, and to contain a moral lesson. Dissatisfied with traditional publishing routes, Cosgrove established Serendipity Press. He managed all aspects of the business, from writing and publishing to shipping and maintenance. The press thrived, selling millions of books and leading to Cosgrove's sale of the company to Penguin/Putnam in 1978.

Following the sale of Serendipity Press, Stephen Cosgrove continued to explore new avenues in children's media. He ventured into multimedia literature and, in the early 2000s, developed interactive websites like Web-pop and BuggBooks, offering digital reading experiences for children. These platforms allowed for online story consumption with interactive illustrations and author-narrated tales. Cosgrove's prolific output includes numerous other series, such as ArkAngels, Barely There, and Treasure Trolls, often collaborating with different illustrators. His body of work now totals around 325 books, catering to a wide range of young readers.
