Born in San Francisco, she pursued her literary ambitions at Syracuse University, where she met her husband and collaborator, Stanley Edgar Hyman. Jackson gained widespread recognition with her unsettling short story "The Lottery," which exposed the hidden darkness within seemingly ordinary communities. Her subsequent works, including the novel "The Haunting of Hill House" and her Gothic masterpiece "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," solidified her reputation as a master of suspense and psychological horror. Despite her literary success, Jackson's health declined, leading to her premature death at age 48.

She continued to explore dark psychological territory in novels such as "Hangsaman" (1951), inspired by a local disappearance, and the acclaimed supernatural horror novel "The Haunting of Hill House" (1959). Her final novel, "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" (1962), is widely regarded as her masterpiece, a Gothic tale of isolation and psychological dread.
