Shems Friedlander was an American Islamic scholar, artist, and filmmaker known for his work on Sufism, particularly the Mevlevi tradition.
Shems Friedlander (1940-2022) was an American scholar, visual artist, filmmaker, and author who became a prominent figure in the study and practice of Islamic mysticism. After graduating from the Massachusetts College of Art, he initially worked as a graphic designer. His engagement with Sufism began through Vilayet Inayet Khan, leading him to Muzaffer Ozak Efendi and his eventual conversion to Islam in the early 1970s. Friedlander became a member of the Mevlevi Sufi order, a tradition founded by followers of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi.
Friedlander dedicated much of his life to exploring and disseminating knowledge about Sufi traditions, with a particular focus on the Mevlevi order. He served as a professor at the American University in Cairo starting in 1994, contributing to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. His influence was recognized in 2012 when he was named among the 500 most influential Muslims globally. Friedlander passed away in Istanbul at the age of 82. His contributions extended beyond scholarship to include visual arts and filmmaking, with his works translated into multiple languages.
