Swami Sivananda Saraswati was a prolific yoga guru, spiritual teacher, and prolific author who founded the Divine Life Society.

Born Kuppuswami in 1887, Swami Sivananda Saraswati initially trained as a physician and practiced medicine in British Malaya for a decade. Dissatisfied with superficial healing, he returned to India in 1923 to pursue spiritual studies, eventually being initiated into monasticism in Rishikesh by his guru, Vishvananda Saraswati. He established the Divine Life Society in 1936, dedicated to distributing spiritual literature and promoting yoga and Vedanta. Sivananda authored over 200 books on these subjects and developed his own approach, termed the "Yoga of Synthesis," which integrated various paths of Hinduism like Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja Yoga. He was known for his extensive travels and modern methods of disseminating his teachings, earning him the nickname 'Swami Propagandananda'. He passed away in 1963 at his ashram near Rishikesh.

Early Life and Spiritual Calling

Swami Sivananda Saraswati, born Kuppuswami on September 8, 1887, in Tamil Nadu, came from a religious Brahmin family. He displayed early academic and physical prowess, excelling in his medical studies. After graduating, he spent ten years as a doctor in British Malaya, where he was known for treating the poor without charge. However, he eventually felt that medicine addressed only surface-level ailments, prompting him to seek deeper spiritual understanding. This led him to return to India in 1923 to embark on a spiritual quest.

Founding the Divine Life Society and Spiritual Teachings

Upon returning to India, Sivananda settled in Rishikesh and was initiated into the Sannyasa order in 1924 by Vishvananda Saraswati. He dedicated himself to intense spiritual practices and service, even running a charitable dispensary. In 1936, he founded the Divine Life Society, an organization focused on distributing spiritual knowledge freely. He also established the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948. Sivananda's teachings, which he called the "Yoga of Synthesis," aimed to integrate the diverse yogic paths of action (Karma Yoga), devotion (Bhakti Yoga), knowledge (Jnana Yoga), and meditation (Raja Yoga).

Dissemination and Legacy

Sivananda was a highly prolific author, writing over 200 books on yoga and Vedanta, many of which are still available for free. He was known for his dynamic approach to spreading his teachings, traveling widely and utilizing modern methods, which earned him the moniker 'Swami Propagandananda.' His efforts significantly popularized yoga and spiritual philosophy. He established his main ashram, Sivananda Ashram, on the banks of the Ganges near Rishikesh. His disciples, such as Satyananda Saraswati, went on to found their own influential yoga organizations and schools, continuing his legacy.
