Katherine Thomson was an English writer known for historical biographies and novels, and for assembling literary circles.

Katherine Thomson, born Byerley (1797–1862), was an English author recognized for her historical narratives and fictional works. She was the daughter of Thomas Byerley, associated with Josiah Wedgwood's pottery business, and the sister of Maria Byerley, who established a school. Thomson married physician Anthony Todd Thomson, and together they cultivated a vibrant artistic and literary salon in London, attracting notable figures of their time. After her husband's passing, she spent time abroad and experienced the tragic loss of her son. She returned to England and passed away in 1862.

Thomson's writing career began with biographical compilations, initially for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. She developed a style of anecdotal biography, which provided material for her historical novels. Her notable biographical works include "Memoirs of the Court of Henry the Eighth," "Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Ralegh," and "Memoirs of the Jacobites of 1715 and 1745." She also penned numerous novels such as "Constance" and "Anne Boleyn." Under the pseudonym Grace Wharton, she co-authored "The Queens of Society" and "The Wits and Beaux of Society" with her son, John Cockburn Thomson. The pseudonyms were inspired by her ancestry, tracing back to the Byerley family and their connection to the Whartons.

Literary and Artistic Circles

During her time in London with her husband, physician Anthony Todd Thomson, Katherine Thomson was instrumental in creating a notable artistic and literary gathering place. Their residence served as a hub for intellectual exchange, attracting prominent figures from the arts and literature. Early acquaintances included the poet Thomas Campbell and the artist David Wilkie. As their social circle evolved, they also became close with literary figures like Thackeray, Robert Browning, and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, who became a particular friend. These gatherings fostered an environment of creative discourse and intellectual engagement among leading personalities of the era.

Biographical and Historical Writing

Katherine Thomson's literary output was significantly shaped by her interest in biography and history, often at her husband's encouragement. She began with a biography of Wolsey for a prominent educational society. Her approach to biography was anecdotal, drawing inspiration from writers like Isaac D'Israeli, and this style informed her historical novels. Her extensive biographical compilations covered significant historical periods and figures. These included detailed accounts of royalty and notable personalities from the reigns of Henry VIII and Queen Anne, as well as memoirs of figures involved in the Jacobite uprisings. Her work "Memoirs of Viscountess Sundon" faced criticism for factual inaccuracies in the "Quarterly Review."

Novels and Pseudonymous Works

Beyond her biographical endeavors, Katherine Thomson was a prolific novelist. Her fictional works include titles such as "Constance," "Rosabel," and "Anne Boleyn," many of which saw multiple editions. She also explored themes of social dynamics in novels like "Widows and Widowers" and "Faults on Both Sides." In collaboration with her son, John Cockburn Thomson, she wrote "The Queens of Society," "The Wits and Beaux of Society," and "The Literature of Society" under the shared pseudonym Grace Wharton. This pseudonym, along with others potentially used by her son, was linked to their family's lineage, specifically their descent from Robert Byerley and his connection to the Wharton family.
