Samantha Shannon

Samantha Shannon, born in London in 1991, is a British author recognized for her contributions to dystopian and fantasy literature. Her writing journey began at fifteen with an unpublished novel. She pursued her education in English Language and Literature at St Anne's College, Oxford, graduating in 2013.

Shannon gained significant attention for her debut novel, The Bone Season, published in 2013. This novel, the first in a planned seven-book series, is set in a future dystopian London and features a protagonist who navigates a world where clairvoyants are oppressed. The book secured a substantial deal with Bloomsbury Publishing prior to its release, and its film and TV rights have been optioned by multiple production companies.

Her standalone fantasy novel, The Priory of the Orange Tree, published in 2019, offers a reimagining of the Saint George and the Dragon legend and has been noted for its sapphic themes. A prequel to this work, A Day of Fallen Night, was released in 2023. Shannon has also indicated plans for further stories within this universe, now referred to as The Roots of Chaos cycle.

Born in Hammersmith, London, in November 1991, Samantha Shannon spent her formative years in Ruislip. Her interest in writing emerged at the young age of fifteen, leading her to pen her first, albeit unpublished, novel. She continued her academic pursuits at St Anne's College, Oxford, where she studied English Language and Literature, completing her degree in 2013. Her family has Irish roots, with ancestors originating from County Roscommon.

Shannon's literary career took off with the publication of her debut novel, The Bone Season, in 2013. This novel, set in a dystopian 2059, introduces the character of Paige Mahoney, a "dreamwalker" operating within the Republic of Scion, a regime that has long persecuted clairvoyants. The book was the first of a planned seven-part series and was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing in a significant pre-publication deal. Following its release, Shannon's work drew comparisons to J. K. Rowling. Film and television rights for The Bone Season have been explored by production companies since 2012.

In 2019, Bloomsbury Publishing released Shannon's standalone high fantasy novel, The Priory of the Orange Tree.
