While often described as a possessor of the philosopher's stone and a mentor to Paracelsus, much of his biography appears to stem from autobiographical accounts within texts attributed to him, which may have served to lend an "aura of historicity" rather than providing verifiable facts. The name "Salomon Trismosin" itself is likely a pseudonym, with some speculation identifying him with Ulrich Poysel. His alchemical journey reportedly began after witnessing an unsuccessful transmutation, sparking a lifelong pursuit.

Trismosin's writings detail extensive travels and encounters, including a meeting with an alchemist named Tauler in Venice, from whom he claims to have learned transmutation secrets. He also describes a journey to the East, a common trope among medieval alchemists seeking ancient knowledge. The most concrete historical link is Paracelsus's own record of meeting Trismosin in Constantinople in 1520, where Trismosin allegedly instructed him in alchemy. Trismosin is also credited with possessing the panacea, and a late 17th-century sighting places him alive near the century's end.

Details about Salomon Trismosin's life are scarce and largely derived from legendary narratives found within works attributed to him. Historians suggest these accounts primarily served to imbue the texts with a sense of historical authenticity rather than offering factual biographical data. The name "Salomon Trismosin" is widely considered a pseudonym. While occultist Franz Hartmann proposed "Pfieffer" as his real name without evidence, historian Stephen Skinner has linked him to Ulrich Poysel, a known teacher of Paracelsus. Much of what is known comes from a brief autobiography included in his work, Aureum Vellus. Trismosin's purported interest in alchemy began in his youth after observing an alchemist named Flocker, whose subsequent death prevented him from sharing his secrets, igniting Trismosin's own quest.

According to his own accounts, Trismosin embarked on a journey in 1473 seeking genuine alchemists, but encountered only charlatans, temporarily halting his pursuit. He later met a German alchemist named Tauler in Venice, who is said to have imparted alchemical secrets, enabling Trismosin to transmute mercury into gold. Supported by a nobleman, Trismosin continued his experiments until the patron's death. He later claimed to have acquired knowledge of duplication and received entrusted kabbalistic and magical books in Egyptian. Paracelsus himself documented meeting Trismosin in Constantinople around 1520, stating that Trismosin instructed him in the art of alchemy. This reported mentorship is a significant aspect of Trismosin's enduring legacy. Beyond this, Trismosin is also associated with possessing the panacea. A French traveler reportedly last saw him alive at the close of the 17th century.
