His political career began when he was elected to the German Bundestag in 2002, representing the constituency of Dortmund I. He remained a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) until November 2018. In November 2020, Bülow made a notable move by joining Die PARTEI, becoming their first representative in the Bundestag. He continued his service in the Bundestag until 2021.
Bülow was also an author, publishing several books. His written works explored themes related to contemporary political and social issues, including generational responsibility, the influence of lobbyists on democracy, and pacifism. He passed away in January 2026 at the age of 54, following a serious illness.
