Soka Gakkai International (SGI) was officially formed on January 26, 1975, during a conference held on Guam. This event brought together representatives from 51 nations, who elected Daisaku Ikeda, then the third president of Japan's Soka Gakkai organization, as the founding president of SGI. The choice of Guam as the founding location was symbolic, referencing its historical significance during World War II and its proximity to Tinian Island, from which the atomic bombs were launched. The organization's initial global outreach began after World War II, as some members relocated internationally. This expansion was further accelerated in 1960 when Ikeda assumed leadership of the Soka Gakkai in Japan. His presidency saw visits to North and South America and the establishment of the Soka Gakkai's first American headquarters in Los Angeles in 1963.

SGI-affiliated organizations outside Japan are prohibited from direct political involvement. SGI has received official recognition, including a special accord from the Italian government in 2015 acknowledging it as an official religion and eligible for taxpayer funding, and a commemorative postage stamp issued by Uruguay in 2000.
