Surender Sharma, born in 1945, is an Indian poet, writer, and humorist recognized for his comic sketches and performances, often featuring his wife. He is particularly known for his signature refrain in the Haryanavi dialect, "chaar lainaa suna raha hoon." His contributions to literature earned him the Padma Shri award from the Government of India in 2013.

Beyond his literary achievements, Sharma has held significant positions in cultural and governmental bodies. He served as the Vice-Chairman of the Hindi Academy in Delhi and previously as the vice-president of the Haryana Sahitya Academy. He is also associated with the Central Board of Film Certification. Sharma's career in poetry began during his college years in the 1960s, and he transitioned to professional performances in the 1970s, utilizing both Marwari and Haryanavi dialects in his humorous works. He also hosted a daily radio show and edited poetry collections.

Early Life and Career

Born into a Brahmin family in Haryana, Surender Sharma hails from the village of Nangal Choudhary in the Mahendragarh district. He pursued higher education at Shri Ram College of Commerce, part of Delhi University, where he earned a degree in Commerce. Sharma began reciting poetry in 1966 while still a student, but his professional career in the field commenced in the 1970s. His comedic style often incorporates the Marwari and Haryanavi dialects. A significant milestone in his career was the release of the T-Series cassette "Chaar Laina Kavi" in 1980. In the 2000s, he hosted a daily radio program called "Sharmaji Se Poocho" on Red FM 93.5. During the 1990s, he also took on the role of editor for three poetry collections titled "Ras Kalash." Additionally, he serves as a trustee and vice president for the Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology.

Published Works and Recognition

Surender Sharma has authored several books, including "Mansarovar Ke Kauwe," "Buddhimaanon Ki Moorkhtaaein," "Bade-Badon Ke Utpaat," and "Mujhse Bhala Na Koy." His literary and comedic contributions have been widely acknowledged. In addition to the prestigious Padma Shri award conferred in 2013, he has received other honors such as the Kaka Hathrasi Hasya Samman and the Manhar Thahaka Award, recognizing his impact in the realm of humor and literature.
