Ramón del Valle Inclán

Born in Galicia in 1866, Ramón del Valle-Inclán became a prominent Spanish dramatist and novelist, recognized as part of the Generation of '98. His literary career, which began with early works influenced by symbolism and modernism, evolved towards radical formal experimentation. Valle-Inclán's writing challenged traditional Spanish theater, critiquing bourgeois hypocrisy and societal norms, and is noted for its subversive political commentary, moving from absolutism towards anarchism. His work often employed crude language and vulgar imagery to mock theatrical conventions and societal values. Despite facing financial difficulties and personal hardships, including the amputation of his arm due to an injury, he maintained a bohemian and aestheticist lifestyle.
