Peter Fenwick

Peter Fenwick was a British neuropsychiatrist and neurophysiologist who dedicated a significant portion of his career to the study of epilepsy and, notably, end-of-life phenomena. Born in Nairobi in 1935, he pursued his scientific education in England, graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge, and gaining clinical experience at St Thomas' Hospital. His professional life included senior lecturing positions at King's College London and consultancy roles at major hospitals, including the Maudsley and John Radcliffe.

Fenwick's work extended to leading research initiatives like the Horizon Research Foundation and the British branch of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. He was also involved in the Human Consciousness Project, contributing to studies such as the AWARE study on awareness during resuscitation. His academic contributions were recognized through editorial board memberships for several prominent journals in neurology and consciousness studies. Fenwick passed away in London in November 2024 at the age of 89.

Peter Fenwick's engagement with near-death experiences (NDEs) began after reading Raymond Moody's work. Initially skeptical, his perspective shifted following a patient's account that mirrored Moody's findings. Fenwick subsequently gathered and analyzed over 300 NDE accounts. His research in this area led to the argument that human consciousness might extend beyond the physical brain, a view that drew criticism from some within the medical community. Fenwick posited that consciousness could be more than a mere product of brain function, suggesting that phenomena like NDEs might be part of a broader spectrum that includes mystical experiences. He collaborated with his wife, Elizabeth Fenwick, on "The Art of Dying," which advocated for a more holistic approach to end-of-life care, arguing that modern medicine often overlooks the spiritual needs of dying patients. Their belief that the mind could be independent of the brain, as explored in a BBC documentary, was met with skepticism and accusations of biased reporting from some observers.

Throughout his career, Peter Fenwick held significant academic and clinical positions. He served as a senior lecturer at King's College, London, and as a consultant neuropsychologist at prestigious institutions such as the Maudsley Hospital and John Radcliffe Hospital, also extending his services to Broadmoor Hospital. His international reach included a visiting professorship at the Riken Neurosciences Institute in Japan. Fenwick was a key figure in organizations dedicated to exploring consciousness and end-of-life phenomena, notably as president of the Horizon Research Foundation and the British branch of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. His involvement in the Human Consciousness Project, particularly the AWARE study, aimed to investigate awareness during resuscitation. Fenwick's expertise was also recognized through his service on the editorial boards of influential journals like the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, and the Journal of Consciousness Studies.
