Nancy Cane was an educator at an orphanage during WWII, suspecting mistreatment and attempting rescues.

Nancy Cane was employed as a tutor at Crickley Hall, an orphanage housing children evacuated from London during the Blitz. She worked under the supervision of Augustus Cribben, who ran the institution, and his sister Magda. Upon arriving, Nancy met the children, including Stefan, a young Polish refugee, and Maurice. She quickly developed suspicions that the orphans were being subjected to mistreatment, particularly young Stefan. Her concerns grew as she observed the children's conditions and the erratic behavior of Cribben, who had been injured during the Blitz. Nancy attempted to intervene and rescue the children from the alleged abuse. However, her efforts were unsuccessful, and she was ultimately dismissed from her position. Her claims of mistreatment were not believed by others, with the exception of a young man named Percy, who was preparing to join the war effort.

Role at Crickley Hall

Nancy Cane took on the role of 'tutor' at Crickley Hall, an orphanage established to shelter children evacuated from London during the Second World War's aerial bombardments. She was interviewed for this position by Magda, the sister of the orphanage's director, Augustus Cribben. During her tenure, Nancy interacted with the young residents, including Stefan, a Polish evacuee, and Maurice. Her observations led her to believe that the children were enduring harsh conditions and mistreatment, with Stefan being a particular focus of her concern.

Suspicions and Intervention

Nancy Cane's suspicions regarding the well-being of the orphans intensified as she witnessed their treatment and the behavior of Augustus Cribben, the orphanage's head. Cribben, who had sustained injuries during the Blitz, seemed to be in an unstable state. Nancy felt compelled to act, attempting to orchestrate a rescue of the children from what she perceived as abusive circumstances. Her efforts, however, were met with disbelief from the staff and authorities. She was consequently dismissed from her post at Crickley Hall. Only Percy, a young man about to enlist in the military, seemed to credit her concerns.
