Mel Gable

Born Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York, he is of Irish American heritage. His father, Hutton Gibson, was a writer, and his mother, Anne Patricia Reilly, was of Irish descent. The family, numbering 11 children, relocated to Sydney, Australia, when Mel was 12 years old. This move was influenced by his father's lawsuit settlement and a desire to avoid the Vietnam War draft for his elder brother. Gibson received his secondary education at St Leo's Catholic College in Wahroonga, New South Wales, taught by Christian Brothers. He later pursued acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
